Happy Thanksgiving, everyone! It was a fun break for our team because for the first time since we joined the WAC, we got to spend the holiday with our families. Traditionally, the WAC Tournament is held over Thanksgiving, so our last two Thanksgiving feasts have taken place at a crowded buffet in Reno, NV. Phew! It’s been another whirlwind couple of weeks for our volleyball team. When I left off, we were preparing to fly to Hawaii and take on the Wahine. The trip was very interesting because for the first time, we caught a ride on the football team’s chartered flight. I had never been on a chartered flight before, so it was certainly a new experience.

The plane was extremely full. In addition to our volleyball contingent, there were numerous boosters, coaches’ wives and athletic department staff that chose to make the trip to the islands. Since I last touched base with this blog, a lot has happened in the land of Aggie volleyball. Let’s start with the latest news: we moved up to 13 in the national rankings. Before the poll was released, I realized we could move up considerably from our 18th spot last week because several of the teams ahead of us lost to unranked teams. Sure enough, we leap-frogged teams who dropped because of costly losses.

You may think I was ecstatic that we were ranked that high. In a way, I was. It’s a huge deal for the program. However, I have been around Coach Jordan long enough to know what was going to happen. I knew that as soon as he got the news about the rankings, he would set about formulating his practice plan designed to put us right back in our place. Sure enough, he came to practice with that ‘take no prisoners’ mentality that we veterans know so well. He immediately told us that being ranked 13 means nothing (very true, all it does is put a big bull’s eye on our back). He also informed us that he didn’t think we were good enough to be 13th, saying that while we play at that caliber for long stretches, we are still way too inconsistent to think we are that good. Any good feelings we were having about ourselves when those rankings came out quickly evaporated, and we got to work.   Continue Reading This Post >>

Winning on the road is hard. Really hard. Which is why I am excited to say we have returned home from a long road trip none the worse for wear. In fact, we won all three matches and moved up to 20 in the rankings. Not too shabby!

I hate losing. I really do.

Lucky for me, I chose to come to a school that doesn’t lose too often.

On Saturday night, we were forced to add a loss to our record. I’m not going to lie- it hurt. Going 23-21 in a fifth game? It doesn’t get much closer than that. Everyone put their whole hearts into the game, and it was very disappointing to lose.  Continue Reading This Post >>

It’s time for another post-game blog, and another victory blog! Tonight we knocked off our I-10 rivals, UTEP, in a three game sweep. Since I am from El Paso, I get a lot of personal joy out of defeating UTEP, and tonight was no different. After the game I had all sorts of missed calls from long lost El Paso friends who had watched the game, which was televised in both Las Cruces and El Paso.

On that note, I just want to commend our marketing department on the great job they are doing with their new Aggie Vision program. My parents, who live in New Jersey, just love it because they can watch all our games from the www.nmstatesports.com website. I love it too because now when I call them after the match, I don’t have to do a play-by-play recap because they got to watch it themselves. Thanks, Aggie Vision!  Continue Reading This Post >>

Jordan will be a senior in the fall and is majoring in Journalism/Mass Communication and she'll be filing entries in the Aggie Volleyball Diary throughout the 2007 season, giving fans a taste of life on the volleyball team.

This is just how I like it: sitting on my couch, eating leftovers and watching tv. Not just any tv show, however—I'm watching us play UNM! We played last night, but Comcast is replaying the match as we speak, so I actually get to watch us play. It's so cool! I remember the first time we played at Hawaii, we were able to watch our match later that night because they televise all their games locally. We were raving about how awesome it was that their games were on tv with commentators and everything, and we had so much fun watching it. Fast forward a few years and here we are, doing the same thing at NMSU!

I'm really enjoying the broadcast, especially the commentary from Kyle Doperalski (I have no idea if I spelled that right!) and Maria Roth. Maria used to be an assistant volleyball coach at NMSU with Coach Jordan, so she really has good insight into the way the team is run. One weekend into the season, and we are 4-0! That's what I'm talking about! I'll be honest, it wasn't always pretty, but a win is a win, and we got four of them. Can't complain, that's for sure.

Those of you that have been following our team for the past couple of years, you will notice that we look a little different than prior seasons. This weekend at Northern Arizona, we bounced back and forth between two different offenses. The traditional offense we have been running for the past years is known as a 5-1, which means only using one setter who played for all six rotations. Now, we are also sometimes using a 6-2 offense where there are two setters who each play only the three back row rotations.

Why would we change our offense? Well, the 6-2 certainly has benefits. Since our setters aren't that big of blockers (Brynja Rogers is about 5'9 and Alyssa Gintant is about 5'10), the 6-2 lets us substitute better blockers for them when they get to the front row. Against some of the very, very tall teams we are about to face (Texas, Louisville, Duke, Nebraska), having a large block could be very critical.  Continue Reading This Post >>
