Lauren Loerch's Aggie Volleyball Diary :: September 27th, 2013

Hey there Aggie fans!

The Aggie volleyball team traveled to Edinburg, Texas to compete in our first conference match of this 2013 season and we won!! This season so far has been pretty rocky and definitely a learning experience. We played some great teams in our preseason and win or lose, each match has taught us something different. While we learn from the past, we also press on towards the future. Conference play is basically a clean slate and our goal, as a team, is to go undefeated in conference and we have completed our first step. This will not come easy! There are a lot of competitive teams in our conference and to be undefeated we have to be disciplined, work as a team, and play with passion and heart.

As our season continues, we will be traveling basically every other week. This means that we all have to stay on our school work, and there will also be many interesting behind the scenes situations (If you haven’t seen the Lauren’s Lowdown: Worst travel day ever, you should!!).  Continue Reading This Post >>

Lauren Loerch's Aggie Volleyball Diary :: September 12th, 2013

Hey there Aggie fans and thank you for reading! This past week the volleyball team traveled to Hawai'i for the Hawaiian Airlines Wahine Volleyball Classic tournament. Our travel day to Hawai'i might’ve been the longest day in our lives. First, we woke up dark and early at 3:45 a.m. to depart Las Cruces at 4:10 a.m. The short flight from El Paso to Phoenix was on time and thankfully pretty smooth but we had no clue what was about to happen when we landed. We landed around 7 a.m. in Phoenix and we got the lovely news (sarcasm) that our flight was delayed 12 hours. No folks, that is not a type-o. WE WERE DELAYED 12 HOURS!! Thankfully we got meal vouchers from the friendly Hawaiian Airlines staff so we enjoyed some breakfast at the enchanting Phoenix airport. Since we were supposed to practice when we landed at our previous time coach decided that it would be a good idea to practice at the Arizona State campus during our layover. Thankfully, the Arizona State facilities were open and available to practice in (thank you!).

After a productive practice and after showering we were on our way back to the airport to grab our dinner vouchers. During the rest of the layover we did homework, slept comfortably on the floor of the airport and spent some quality team time. When we finally started getting ready to leave we got the heart breaking and earth shattering (okay it’s not that dramatic) news that we were delayed until 1:15 a.m. - THAT IS ALMOST A 20 HOUR DELAY!! When we got the news I think I just collapsed on the floor. Finally 12:45 a.m. slowly rolled around and it was time to board the plane. It was a smooth take off which I was very thankful for and it started the six hour countdown until we landed in Honolulu. The plane was dead silent for most of the trip minus the sounds of fussy babies --- four to be exact; and I was sitting in the middle of all of them. Gotta love children on planes!  Continue Reading This Post >>

Lauren Loerch's Aggie Volleyball Diary :: September 3rd, 2013

Hey there Aggie fans!

Last weekend we traveled up to UC-Berkeley where we faced Nevada, Cal and Santa Barbara in the Molten Classic Tournament. The weekend started off spectacularly with a clean sweep against Nevada. We came into the tournament confident and eager to compete and that’s one of the main reasons why we played so well against Nevada.

The next afternoon we faced Cal which also happens to be the former team I played on. It was great competition and good to see old teammates but our lack of toughness at the service line and not taking care of the easy ball really hurt us and unfortunately we lost in three games.

After some food, rest and icing our sore muscles we were back on the court again facing Santa Barbara. The whistle blew to allow the first serve and the game began. The match was very close and ended up going to five games. In college volleyball we play the best three out of five games. We won the first and fourth games but unfortunately lost the second, third and fifth. Our thirteen total serving errors, ball handling errors and bad communication really shot us in the foot but we are all determined to bounce back.  Continue Reading This Post >>

Lauren Loerch's Aggie Volleyball Diary :: August 27th, 2013

Hey Aggie fans! I am senior outside hitter Lauren Loerch on the New Mexico State volleyball team and this season I will be keeping a weekly blog giving Aggie fans the behind the scenes look into the life of an Aggie Volleyball player, both on the court and off. I really hope you enjoy the blog and also don’t forget to check out the video of Lauren’s Lowdown for each week!

Saturday, August 10 was the start of the official 2013 season. At 7:30 a.m. my alarm clock screamed at me to wake up but I had already been awake for two hours, heart racing and itching to get on the court with my team. The fond memories of competing in the great Pan American Center last season played in my head; the fans cheering “Go Aggies”, the referee’s whistle blowing allowing the next serve, shoes screeching on the floor while making the impossible dig and who could forget Coach Mike Jordan’s booming voice in our team huddle.

We had a successful season last year for the most part, but this is a new year, and we are looking strong. This 2013 season we have an army of nineteen players, six coaches and an amazing sports medicine staff and we are training just about everyday for battle.  Continue Reading This Post >>
