The Daily Aggie :: 10/04/07

Last night the Aggie volleyball team went into Salt Lake City and defeated Utah on their home court. That's something that isn't easy to do. Utah has a 92-27 record at Crimson Court over the past nine seasons, that's only three losses per season.

Tonight the Aggies return to conference play up the road in Logan as they take on Utah State. As we mentioned last night, Utah State is 8-7 overall but 5-1 in the WAC and tied for second place with NMSU.

Chase Holbrook is currently 246 votes behind Tulsa's Paul Smith in the Davey O'Brien Award fan voting. Head to the O'Brien website to cast your vote for Chase. Fan voting closes on the 29th of this month and the top three vote recipients will automatically be added to the semifinal list.

The Daily Aggie :: 10/03/07

Tonight the Aggie volleyball team is in Salt Lake City to take on the Utah Utes. The Aggies lead the all-time series with Utah 16-15 but they haven't met since 1993, with Utah winning that match 3-0.

Utah is 6-7 but they're on a four match winning streak and will be a tough win. Utah was an NCAA tournament participant last season and at one point had won 22 straight matches. Three of their seven losses are to top teams including #5 UCLA, #6 Florida and perennial volleyball power USC.

It appears that Aggie fans can watch the match online for free via Utah's athletic website.

Don't forget to vote for Chase Holbrook in the Davey O'Brien Award fan voting. Voting closes on the 29th of this month. Chase has passed Tennessee's Erik Ainge for 7th place in the standings and is only 246 votes behind Tulsa's Paul Smith.

Unfortunately this morning we don't have any links to share with you so we'll try again this afternoon.

I promised updates if we got them... It's not much but G. Christopher Terry of the Utah Statesman (Utah State's student newspaper) gives his preview of tomorrow night's match between the Northern Aggie volleyball team (Utah State) and the Southern Aggie volleyball team, your 22nd ranked NMSU Aggies.

And yet another update for you. The Sports Network has posted their game preview for Sunday night's tilt between NMSU and Boise State. They're predicting a 33-17 victory for Boise State.

The Daily Aggie :: 10/02/07

You may have noticed that on the right hand side of the page we've posted a quote from Coach Mumme. Hal requested during our interview with him to get the word out about their challenge to alumni and donors to match the contributions that were made of the past few weeks for the Aggies Are Tough Enough To Wear Pink fundraiser benefiting Cowboys For Cancer Research. We'll be posting the contact information for those of you who are interested in donating to this great cause.

If you haven't checked out this week's interview with Coach Mumme, we encourage you to do so.

Don't forget to vote for Chase Holbrook in the Davey O'Brien Award fan voting. Everyone has been doing a great job and Chase is closing the gap on Erik Ainge of Tennessee for 7th place. He's now only 52 votes behind which I know if you all vote, we can erase that deficit by lunchtime. After Erik Ainge, Chase is 230 votes behind Paul Smith from Tulsa. We can eliminate that gap by dinner time if everyone votes. So after you're done reading The Daily Aggie and this week's interview with Coach Mumme, vote.

The Aggies get an extra day off and Boise State gets several extra days off heading into Sunday's game which will be televised on ESPN at 6:00 p.m.

Boise State last played on Thursday night (on ESPN), defeating Southern Miss 38-16.

I'm sure the extra day is a welcome thing for the Aggies who are nursing injuries on offense. Chase Holbrook (ribs), A.J. Harris (ankle) and Nick Cleaver (ankle).

Don't forget to vote for Chase Holbrook in the Davey O'Brien Award fan voting. Voting closes on the 29th of this month.

The Daily Aggie :: 09/30/07

That breeze you felt last night was the collective sigh of relief in Aggie Country. If the win over UTEP was a very large brick in the Hal Mumme construction project, a loss last night would have been the equivalent of a gigantic wrecking ball crashing into that project. But we don't have to worry about that because Paul Young hit the game winning field goal with .7 seconds remaining on the clock.

Yes, the score was tied at 17 when the Aggies lined up for the field goal attempt but you have to think that with Chase Holbrook injured and three starting receivers not playing (A.J. Harris, Derek Dubois and Nick Cleaver), the advantage was on the side of Arkansas-Pine Bluff if the game had headed to overtime.

Before Aggies fans start criticizing the team, take a step back and look at the contributing factors that led to what we saw last night. One, there was the fact that they were missing three starters from their receiving corps. Two, the Aggies had just wrapped up a stretch of four consecutive emotionally charged games. I'm counting the Southeastern Louisiana game because opening night is, well, opening night. Coach Mumme told us in our interview with him last week that it's hard to get up for every game. Three the fanfare, the buildup, the press surrounding Aggies Are Tough Enough To Wear Pink, it's for a great cause but it's still a distraction. Four, an upstart Golden Lions team coming off an embarrasing loss looking to prove, like Appalachian State, that they can play with the big boys.

Combine all of those things and you end up with what you saw last night. A too close for comfort game.

This weekend was a wild and wacky weekend of college football, five of the top ten teams lost and four of those losses were to unranked opponents, and three of those top five teams lost at home. Two other top ten teams, Cal and Wisconsin barely survived being upset themselves.

A win is a win and there are seven ranked teams that wish they had escaped Saturday with a 'W'.

Aggies Survive A Scare 20-17

Down three key receivers in the Air Raid, the Aggie defense came to the rescue picking off Arkansas-Pine Bluff off a tipped ball near the goal line with a little under three minutes left in the game. It was the first interception thrown by the Golden Lions all season.

Paul Young hit a 37-yard field goal to put the Aggies up 20-17 with .7 seconds left and the Aggies avoided a catastrophic loss.

Chase Holbrook was injured midway through the fourth quarter, taking a shot to the ribs. Freshman J.J. McDermott came into the game on the next offensive possession. The Aggies were forced to punt and Arkansas-Pine Bluff got the ball inside the Aggie 30 yard line. That's when the Aggie defense came up with the game saving interception in the endzone.

Chase was still on the bench when the Aggies came out for their final drive. After the Aggies got the ball to their own 45, Chase, showing the same toughness he showed late last season, came back into the game to lead the Aggies down the field for the game winning field goal.

We have a little bit of good news to share with you before we get into the links today. As you may recall a few weeks back we reported to you that Aggie middle hitter Sarah Johnson-Kennedy was in the hospital recovering from complications due to a tonsillectomy, Coach Mike Jordan told AggieVision reporter Jenean Ford last night during the broadcast that Sarah rejoined the team a few days ago and went through a light practice with the team. Coach Jordan hopes that she will be able to contribute fully within the next couple of weeks.

Don't forget to cast your vote for Chase Holbrook in the Davey O'Brien Award fan voting. Chase is still in 8th place, but he is now behind Tennessee quarterback Erik Ainge.

Mike Marzelli of the Pine Bluff Commercial asks how does Arkansas-Pine Bluff rebound from it's worst loss since 1983? The Golden Lions will find out on Saturday. Pine Bluff head coach Mo Forte says “Obviously [New Mexico State is] a good football program and they’re the biggest challenge we’ve faced since I’ve been here, but who’s to say that [Southern Illinois] isn’t as good as a mid-level Division I team like they are?”

(Note to Aggie fans: Southern Illinois is the 7th ranked team in Division I-AA)  Continue Reading This Post >>
