The Daily Aggie :: 08/25/07

The fall college sports season officially kicked off for the Aggies last night as the Aggie volleyball team notched the first win of the 2007/2008 Aggie season with a sweep of Albany at the Northern Arizona University Invitational.

Look for a complete writeup this weekend by our volleyball expert Mel.

The Sporting News' Mike DeCourcy writes about future Aggie basketball opponent Duke's schedule. DeCourcy writes "Duke basketball is mighty, but its commitment to remaining at Cameron Indoor Stadium constricts the Blue Devils' ability to write the biggest checks possible to lure opponents for guarantee games. What Duke offers instead is a "unique experience," Cragg said, as well as the high degree of certainty that someone (most likely ESPN) will put the game on national television."

Our condolences go out to the family of Oklahoma recruit Herman Mitchell. The linebacker was shot to death in an apartment complex on Friday. Aggie fans are painfully familiar with the death of a prospect as last summer the Aggie football team lost projected starting linebacker Shauna Leupepe. The experience was almost relived when early this year Aggie star basketball recruit Herb Pope was shot.

Mike Huguenin of the Orlando Sentinal gives his ranking of all 120 (he included Western Kentucky) Division I-A quarterbacks (I guess he didn't get the Football Bowl Subdivision memo). Aggie signal caller Chase Holbrook comes in at number 10. The quarterbacks from rivals UNM and UTEP come in at 83 and 88 respectively.

Love college football? Enjoy the pregame shows? If you do, ESPN has created a little slice of heaven as they've announced that they will have a 25 (yes TWENTY FIVE) hour lead-in to ESPN's first college game of the season starting on August 29th at 7 p.m. ET. Part of the programming will include fellow WAC member Hawa'i, who moved their practice time to 9 p.m. (Hawai'i time) to fill the 3 a.m. ET slot on ESPN.

UPDATE #2 lists it's Top 10 non-BCS players, Aggie quarterback Chase Holbrook is listed at #6. Of the ten players listed, FIVE are from the WAC. Randy Harrison from the Albuquerque Journal writes about "The Play". No not THAT play, I'm referring to the play that may have changed Chase Holbrook's football future (Registration required, use the "Trial Pass" option, it's free).

Aggies in a bowl game? It's no joking matter according to an article on

Could Elizabethtown High School in Kentucky be the next breeding ground for the Air Raid? It will be if former Mumme understudy Brad Todd has anything to say about it.

Future Aggie volleyball opponent Texas is one of ESPN's top five contenders to knock another future Aggie volleyball opponent (and reigning national champion) Nebraska off it's perch.

Finally, off the topic of Aggie sports, reports that there's an alarming trend in college sports these days, only 42% of women's athletic teams are have a female head coach.

Welcome, I'd like to take a second to introduce everyone to our newest feature, The Daily Aggie. The goal of The Daily Aggie is to provide links to articles from various news media outlets around the country about Aggie athletics. From time to time I'll also be throwing in a link or two to articles or information that I think you as an Aggie fan will want to be aware of.

Let's get this thing going!

Collin Mickle of the Dothan Eagle talks about the Aggie offense and the Aggie defense which he points out was ranked 90th or worse in every defensive category. has posted their early 2007/2008 WAC men's basketball preview and their expert's prediction for who will win the WAC. Surprisingly, the expert has pegged Utah State as his pick to win the WAC. Maybe it's not that big a surprise since former UNM men's basketball coach turned television analyst Fran Fraschilla is their expert.

Finally, Tim Korte of the Associated Press has written a nice article about Coach Mumme turning Chase Holbrook into a QB. Here's a fun little tidbit for you, did you know that most of the schools were recruiting Chase as a tight end?
