LAS CRUCES, N.M. – The New Mexico State football team went through 110 plays in its first scrimmage of the spring Saturday at Aggie Memorial Stadium and freshman wide receiver LaVorick Williams highlighted the day with his seven receptions for 167 yards and one touchdown.

The Aggies “Air Raid” offense threw for 633 yards on the day and four touchdowns while the running back corps ran for another 78 yards and two touchdowns.

Head coach Hal Mumme said afterwards that he is pleased with where his team is at right now following two weeks of spring football.

“I thought we got a lot better as a team today,” Mumme said. “The quality of play was good toady. We ran 110 plays and there was no drop-off in intensity of play all day and that’s contributed to our increased depth.”

Senior quarterback Chase Holbrook saw limited action, but in his two drives with the offense he completed 12-of-13 passes for 135 yards and one 17-yard touchdown pass to sophomore wide receiver Wes Neiman. Sophomore quarterback J.J. McDermott then took over the offense from there on out and he completed 37-of-64 passes for a staggering 498 yards and three touchdowns.

The offensive highlight play of the day came on the fourth drive of the afternoon when McDermott hooked up with L. Williams on a 12-pass and after Williams broke the tackle from the initial defender, he out-raced the rest of the defense along the sideline for the 75-yard touchdown reception.

Fellow wide receiver Chris Buckner also had a big day catching passes. He caught seven balls for 101 yards and red-shirt freshman Julius Fleming hauled in six passes for 95 yards, including a screen-pass that he took for 66 yards. Tight end Ryan Franzoy and receiver Doug McDaniel caught McDermott’s two other touchdown passes Saturday afternoon.

Junior running back Tonny Glynn led the rushing attach with 33 yards while classmate Seth Smith added 17 yards and two touchdowns
