NMSU Women's Golf Finishes Second At WAC Championships; Chanachai Named Freshman Of The Year

FRESNO, CA - The New Mexico State women's golf team fired a 10-over par 298 in the final day of the 2008 WAC Championships at the Sunnyside Country Club Wednesday, Apr. 23 to move up one spot from day two and finish in second place at the championships. Freshman Suteera Chanachai and sophomore Brittany Collins finished No. 2 and No. 3 overall in the individual medalists while Chanachai was named the WAC Freshman of the Year.

The Aggies finished the tournament firing a 48-over par 912 as a team over the three days, which was seven strokes back of Fresno State who overcame a seven-stroke deficit entering the final round to win the championships. NMSU 298 shot on Wednesday was its best round of the tournament.

Chanachai finished the championship with a 6-over par 222, two strokes back of Fresno State senior Laura Luethke shot a 1-over par 73 in the final round to win the individual medalist honors. Collins had her best round of the tournament in the final day, as she shot a 1-over par 73 Wednesday to move up one spot and finish alone in third place with a 7-over par 223 in the tournament.

After the completion of the tournament, the WAC handed out the 2007-08 awards. Chanachai was selected to the First Team All-WAC to go along with her freshman of the year accolade.

Head coach Paul Brilliant came away from the championships extremely proud of how is team was able lower their score in each round.

"I am extremely proud of our girls for how well they played and competed for us in the championships," Brilliant said. "For us to be able to challenge for the championship with such a young team shows just how bright the future of NMSU women's golf is. Suteera and Brittany played wonderful golf throughout the tournament and I'm very, very proud of them."

Freshman Buz Bowerman-Ritchie and sophomore Maggie Murphy both carded a 3-over par 75's in Wednesday's final round. Bowerman-Ritchie finished the championships in 16th place with a three-round total of 233 while Murphy finished in 27th with a 239. Freshman Apinporn Swaschuto shot a 7-over par 79 in the final round to finish in a tie for 28th with her 240.

Chanachai's eight birdies in the tournament tied for the second most while Collins' 37 pars also tied for the second most in the championships.

Hawai'i, the leader after the first two rounds finished in third place with a 53-over par 917. San Jose State followed them in fourth place with a three-day total of 920. Idaho (923), Boise State (933) and Nevada (946) rounded out the team standings.

The 18th annual WAC Golf Championships was played at the 6,125-yard, par-72 Sunnyside Country Club in Fresno, Calif.
