Aggie Football Has Competitive Spring Game

LAS CRUCES, N.M. - The New Mexico State football team held its annual spring game Saturday, April 26, at Aggie Memorial Stadium as the NMSU defense defeated the NMSU offense 35-17 in a four-quarter battle on the gridiron.

McDermott finished the game going 32-of-49 for 281 yards and two touchdowns, as Julius Fleming tallied nine catches for 94 yards and a touchdown. Marcus Anderson grabbed seven passes while LaVorick Williams brought in eight. Defensively, the Aggies tallied six sacks as Nick Paden led the way with eight tackles and a sack.

The Aggie defense led off the scrimmage with two stops of the offense with Nick Paden and Jamar Cotton leading the way with a sack each. The offense then got on the board with a 70-yard drive, finished off with a 22-yard touchdown pass from J.J. McDermott to Marcus Anderson, as the offense trailed the defense 28-7 with 2:34 left in the first quarter. The defense finished off the first quarter with another four down stop of the offense.

The defense again started the quarter with two stops but the Aggies offense then put together a 70-yard drive, ending with 43-yard touchdown pass from McDermott to Julius Fleming. The offense then trailed the defense 28-14 with six minutes left in the second quarter. The defense tallied four more defensive stops to finish off the second quarter.

In the first half of the scrimmage, McDermott was 23 of 38 for 215 yards and two touchdowns. Fleming led the wide receivers with six catches for 65 yards, while Tonny Glynn led NMSU with three rushes for 13 yards on the ground. Paden led the defense with five tackles and a sack. Kyle Hughes connected on two extra points for the Aggies as well.

The Aggie defense quickly started where it felt off in the first half as Ka’ua Adolpho striped McDermott from behind and Alphonso Powell scooped and scored on a 27-yard fumble return to put the defense up 35-14 with 9:15 to go in the third quarter. Hughes added a 34-yard field goal with :32 second remaining in the third quarter to pull the offense within 17 at 35-17.

Scott Galland saw his first action in an Aggie uniform when he replaced McDermott in the fourth quarter. Galland was 8-of-11 for 104 yards.

Mumme held out start quarterback Chase Holbrook as well as Chris Williams, AJ Harris, Wes Neiman, Brandon Perez and Richie Bolin to avoid any injuries to some of the team’s key players.

The Aggies are holding their final practice Monday at 3:30 p.m. to conclude the 2008 spring schedule.
