The Daily Aggie :: 05/27/08

There isn't a whole lot of Aggie news this morning but there is still plenty of college sports going on. The NCAA Division I college baseball tournament field was announced yesterday and as expected only one team from the WAC, tournament champion Fresno State, will be participating this season. The Bulldogs are headed to the Long Beach State regional and will be facing Long Beach State in the first game. Another team that the Aggies faced during the regular season, New Orleans is 42-19 and will be in the Baton Rouge, LA Regional. If you're interested in the CWS we'll be covering the Long Beach regional for The College Baseball Blog.

If you're a fan of women's college softball then we suggest you tune in to ESPN on Thursday as the women's College World Series gets under way. The surprise of the tournament has been Louisiana-Lafayette of our former conference, The Sun Belt. The Ragin' Cajuns will be taking on the #1 overall seed Florida. There are two other must see games on Thursday. At 2:00 p.m. Texas A&M takes on Virginia Tech. The Aggie softball team took on both of these schools during the 2008 season, falling 3-2 to Texas A&M in the season opener and losing 7-3 to Virginia Tech (the very same Virginia Tech team that defeated the U.S. National Team 1-0 behind a no-hitter from Angela Tincher). The other must see game is between Arizona and UCLA. The Aggies took on Arizona in the Hillenbrand Invitational and fell 9-1 in a run-rule shortened game. Arizona is the two time defending national champion and is led by their ace Taryne Mowatt. Mowatt pitched every single inning of the 2007 WCWS last year a total of 60 innings, 1,035 pitches over a seven-day stretch.

Also on Thursday, Randi Grimes (hammer, javelin), Jordan Veney (discus) and Ingrid Flores (5000m) will take part in the NCAA Women's Track and Field Regional in Lincoln. NE. Grimes and Veney posted regional qualifying marks during the season and Grimes posted a regional qualifying mark in the javelin at the '08 WAC Championships. Flores is participating in the regionals by virtue of winning the gold in the 5000m at the '08 WAC Championships.
