October 12th, 2008. Honolulu, Hawai'i. A time and a place this group of girls will never, as long as well live, forget! This 3-0 sweep against Hawaii on their home court is what we practice for! This 3-0 sweep against Hawai'i is what we dream about! This 3-0 sweep against Hawaii is what we sweat for! This 3-0 sweep against Hawaii is something we've never done before and now it's a reality!
After returning from a long road trip to San Jose State and Utah State we had five long days to practice hard before taking on the Rainbow Wahine on their floor, for their homecoming match. We went into the gym every day with Hawai'i on our minds. We went into the gym, the weight room, the classroom and to bed thinking of beating Hawai'i. All the hard work and concentration seemed to be going down the drain as we got behind during game two (1-8 and eventually 3-12). After a few time outs and some great on the fly adjustments from the wonderful coaching staff, we battled back and took game two!
The next game, we were running on all cylinders. Whitney Woods was blocking out of her mind, Erin Birmingham was hitting every ball to the floor and the digging was making Dave Shoji (Hawaii's head coach) wish Krystal Torres never left the islands! Our freshmen, Jennah Devries, came up huge for us, her defense was awesome and her poise was indescribable.
We were stuck at match point for about three plays but once we prevailed, nothing has ever felt sweeter than taking a match from Hawai'i, three games to none in front of Hawaii's home crowd.
The entire way home on the six-hour plane ride we were super sleepy but every player and coach was still on an emotional high! We worked as a team, as one unit and took it to the number six ranked team in the nation. We will continue to practice hard and look forward to the challenges in front of us... and in November we will go back to the Stan Sheriff Center and play our hearts out again! We need to make this victory a regular occurrence!
