The Daily Aggie :: 12/14/08

The Aggie swimming and diving team was victorious yesterday over the San Diego Torreros.

The Aggies and Miners will renew their 94-year old rivalry this afternoon at the Pan American Center. The Aggies hold a slight 100-94 advantage in the series but aside from the series sweep in the 2006/2007 season, UTEP has dominated the series this decade, winning seven of the past 11 meetings. The Aggies are 51-40 against the Miners at home all-time.

The Aggies obviously must contain Stefon Jackson who went crazy in two games against the Aggies last season with two 30-plus point games but the Aggies also need to keep Randy Culpepper under wraps. Culpepper could be the fastest player on the Miner team. Jackson and Culpepper are averaging almost 40 points per game combined (21.7 for Jackson and 19.1 for Culpepper).

Rebounding is once again going to be a key for the Aggies. UTEP is averaging nearly 40 rebounds per game while the Aggies are averaging 33. On the offensive glass UTEP is averaging just over 14 offensive boards per game while NMSU is averaging just under 10 offensive rebounds per game.

For the Aggies four players are averaging double digits in scoring. Jahmar Young is leading the way with 16.6 points per game, Troy Gillenwater is averaging 15.7 points per game, Jonathan Gibson is averaging 15.5 points per game and Wendell McKines is averaging 12.7.

This should be another classic battle between these two teams. The factor that tips the scale in the Aggies' favor will be the play of the Aggies' inside players. We don't think the Miners can match up with Troy Gillenwater and Wendell McKines. Jahmar Young, Jonathan Gibson, Stefon Jackson and Randy Culpepper will likely cancel each other out which leaves those two inside presences of Gillenwater and McKines.

Today's game starts at 2:00 p.m. and can be seen on AggieVision, Altitude and ESPN Full Court as well as As always Live Stats are available. We'll post the relevant game links a bit later.
