LAS CRUCES, N.M. - New Mexico State men’s basketball head coach Marvin Menzies has hired John McMullen as an assistant coach, Menzies announced Friday, Aug. 10. McMullen joins the Aggies after spending 25 seasons and winning 528 games as head coach at Santa Monica College. He was inducted into the California Community College Basketball Coaches Association in 2005.

“Landing coach Mac completes a very supportive and talent-diverse staff for my first head coaching position,” Menzies said. “Coach Mac and I have an eight-year working history so that obviously gives me a huge confidence level in terms of loyalty, knowledge-base and familiarity. I’m extremely excited about his decision to join the Aggie basketball family. He and his wife Cathy are equally excited about the move to Las Cruces after visiting recently.”

McMullen is the most successful coach in SMC history with a career record of 528-240, which he compiled from 1978-2004. McMullen earned win No. 500, Nov. 16, 2002 with a victory over Santa Barbara and he recorded 20-plus win seasons 16 times at SMC.

“I’m very excited about the opportunity,” McMullen said. “Having not coached for three years, I’ve always maintained that it would be a lot of fun and exciting to help a university program. There is no one I would rather work for than Marvin Menzies because we’ve had such a good relationship over the years and I’m very honored he chose me to come back out of retirement and help him coach the team. It’s been very energizing for me to think that I would have a chance to work with players of this caliber and to be involved with a first-rate program.”

McMullen led SMC to the state championship round on five occasions while the Corsairs only missed the playoffs once during his tenure. He was a five-time conference coach of the year in the Western State and Southern California Conferences and guided his squad to seven-conference championships.

Menzies was an assistant under McMullen at SMC from 1991-94, 1995-96 and the associate head coach from 1997-99 after Menzies served as head coach from 1994-95.

McMullen was also an assistant coach at Brigham Young from 1975-1978 following his time as head coach at Camarillo High School in Camarillo, Calif. from 1968-1975. He earned his bachelor’s degree from Cal State Northridge in 1962 and a master’s degree in 1975 from California Luther College. McMullen and his wife Cathy have two sons Andy and Brian.
