The Daily Aggie :: 02/15/09

The Aggie men's basketball team defeated Fresno State 79-71 in overtime. The Aggies overcame a seven point halftime deficit and a seven point deficit with just 2:38 left in regulation to win their second straight conference game. Wendell McKines scored 22 points and grabbed 13 rebounds and Jahmar Young scored 23 points and grabbed nine boards. Sylvester Seay and Michael Ladd scored 25 and 22 points respectively to lead the Bulldogs. The win keeps the Aggies in fourth place in the WAC, one game ahead of Idaho in the loss column.

Boise State knocked off Utah State in Boise last night to end the UtAgs 19 game winning streak and also keep both Boise State and Nevada alive for a share of the regular season title. The Aggies have been eliminated from contending for the regular season title as Utah State has just three games remaining. However, the Aggies still have a shot at the 2-seed in the conference tournament. They will need Utah State to defeat Nevada in Reno and the Aggies will need to defeat Boise State when the Broncos come to Las Cruces on March 2 and then have another school defeat Boise State. And they will of course win their three remaining games conference against Louisiana Tech (twice), at Hawai'i.

The Aggies will face Louisiana Tech on Monday night and it should be another tough test like last night.

The Aggie softball team split their pair of games yesterday. Kim Watson threw a two-hitter against Eastern Illinois but came up on the losing side of the game. Eastern Illinois' Amber May notched her second victory over the Aggies in the Troy Cox Classic and the Panthers have a chance to finish the tournament undefeated.

The Aggies defeated St. Mary's (CA) last night 17-7 marking the seventh time this season the Aggies have scored at least eight runs in a game.

If the Aggies can defeat St. Mary's (CA) this morning they will finish the tournament in second place with two losses. UTEP also has two losses but because of the Aggies' tiebreaker win over UTEP on Thursday night they would be the second place team.

The Aggie women's basketball team takes on Hawai'i this evening at 5:00 p.m. The Aggies are coming off a huge victory over Nevada on Friday night. The Aggies have a chance to put a little separation between themselves and 8th place Hawai'i with a victory tonight. The Aggies are heading into a stretch of three games where they'll face the 8th and 9th place teams three times. It's important for the Aggies to get a victory tonight as Hawai'i finishes with four of their final five games at home. The Wahine also finish the season at Nevada on March 7th and the WAC Tournament, which is also being held in Reno, begins just three days later giving the Wahine a chance to be fully adjusted to the time change that they undergo each time they travel to the mainland.

Tonight's game will be televised on AggieVision.
