Aggie Women's Basketball Team Falls 78-69 On Senior Night

LAS CRUCES, N.M. - On senior night the Aggie women’s basketball team fell to Louisiana Tech, 78-69. NM State end the regular season with a 9-21 overall record and 5-11 in WAC play.

The Aggies were led by Madison Spence with 26 points on 8-of-22 from the field and eight rebounds. Danisha Corbett added 11 points for NM State, while Erica Sanchez led the team on the boards with 10. As a team, NM State shot 35 percent from the floor and 31 percent from behind the 3-point arc.

NM State and La Tech opened the second half by exchanging baskets as the Aggies held a one point lead at 40-39. La Tech then took their first lead of the game at 41-40 with 17:00 minutes remaining in the game. Back and forth NM State and La Tech went exchanging baskets as neither team could pull away, as the score was tied at 47-47 with 11:51 to go in the game.

A pair of free throws and a lay-up off a turnover for La Tech gave them their largest lead of the game at 53-47 with 9:57 remaining. La Tech added another lay-up to extend their lead to 55-49. The Aggies couldn’t buy a basket, while La Tech continued to shoot well from the field and at the free throw line.

The Aggies continued to fight, cutting the La Tech lead to four at 61-57 with 5:13 to go in the game. Soto hit one of two from the line to cut the lead to three with just over four minutes left. La Tech added a jumper to lengthen their lead to five points at 63-58. Palmer then hit two free throws as the Aggie continued to fight their way back into the game. La Tech held a 63-60 lead with four minutes on the clock.

Five quick points by La Tech pulled their lead back to eight at 68-60 with 2:42 to go in the game. A made free throw by NM State cut the lead to seven before the Aggies forced a turnover and Spence nailed a 3-point bucket to cut the lead to four at 68-64 with 1:44 to go. La Tech responded with a quick lay-up but the Aggies answered and were down just five with under a minute to go. La Tech then hit just one of four free throws, which allowed the Aggies to pull within four at 72-68 with :39 seconds to go.

After a La Tech made free throw, Spence hit one of two free throws to again pull NM State to within four at 73-69. La Tech was immediately fouled and hit two free throws, followed by an Aggie turnover. The Aggies continued to foul La Tech off missed baskets and La Tech took advantage, as the Lady Techsters won 78-69.

The Aggies started the game 3-of-4 from the field and took a quick 7-3 lead with 18:13 remaining in the first half. La Tech would battle back to pull within two points at 9-7 with just under 16 minutes left in the first half. Out of the timeout Spence nailed her second 3-point basket of the game to extend the NM State lead to 12-7. Spence score eight of the Aggies first 12 points.

NM State’s quick pace game plan proved to be too much for La Tech early in the game, as the Aggies held an 18-8 lead with just under 12 minutes to play in the first half. La Tech was shooting just 12.5 percent from the field in the first eight minutes of the game, while NM State shot 43 percent.

The Aggies would go on an 18-to-5 run over seven minutes of play to lead 27-12 with 7:15 to go in the first half. Spence had 14 points to lead the Aggies. NM State continued to pour it on La Tech with tough defense and offensive rebounds.

La Tech would put together a 15-to-2 run of their own, cutting NM State’s 15 point led to just two points at 29-27 with 3:53 to go in the half. After a made free throw by Spence and two turnovers by La Tech the Aggies were able to take advantage and extend their lead by six off a 3-point basket by Corbett as the score was 33-27 with 2:38 remaining in the first half.

A pair of free throws by La Tech and a 3-point basket cut the Aggie lead to 33-32 but NM State refused to give up the lead after a Sanchez lay-up and Corbett’s third 3-point basket of the game gave NM State a six point lead at 38-32 with :40 seconds to go. With nine second on the board, La Tech added a lay-up to cut the Aggie lead to 38-34. A last second shot by the Aggies as the buzzer sounded fell just short as the Aggies held a 38-34 lead at the half.

Spence led the Aggies with 15 points on 5-of-12 shooting, making 2-of-5 3-point baskets. Sanchez let the way for the Aggies on the boards with nine. Corbett added nine points for the Aggies in the half. The Aggies shot 34 percent from the field, as La Tech shot 30 percent from the floor. NM State out rebounded La Tech 28 to 27.

The Aggies will be back in action at the 2009 WAC Basketball Tournament on Wednesday, March 11th. NM State will be the No. 7 seed and will face Louisiana Tech at 8:30 p.m. (MT)
