The Daily Aggie :: 05/11/09

The Aggie baseball team picked up a much needed win yesterday as they defeated San Jose State 11-8 in the series finale. The Aggies' victory was important because it means that they need to win just one game this weekend to make it to the WAC tournament. It may still be possible for the Aggies to miss the conference tournament if they were to get swept at La. Tech and Fresno State were to split with Sacramento State (Fresno State split with San Jose State giving them a tiebreaker over the Aggies). San Jose State, Hawai'i and Lousiana Tech (each with 11 conference victories) are the only three teams who, regardless of what happens this weekend, are guaranteed a spot in the WAC tournament.

The final weekend of baseball will see the top four teams in the standings face each other as the Aggies are headed to Ruston to take on Louisiana Tech and San Jose State is headed to Reno to take on the Wolf Pack. And on the opposite end of the spectrum the Aggies have a chance to earn a share the regular season title. The Aggies would need to sweep Louisiana Tech and then have Nevada take three of four from San Jose State, neither of which are small tasks. If the scenario we just mentioned were to happen, the Aggies would share the regular season title with Nevada and San Jose State and would receive the #3 seed in the conference tournament (due to tiebreakers). Nevada would pick up the #1 seed and SJSU the #2 seed.

This past weekend's games saw Hawai'i and Fresno State split their series, the Aggies of course lost three of four to SJSU but more surprisingly Nevada lost three of four at home to the aforementioned last place Sacramento State Hornets. The Hornets' series win over Nevada means that their series with Fresno State in Sacramento this coming weekend will be for a spot in the conference tournament, the loser of the series stays home. It's crazy to think that the three time defending league champion and defending national champion Fresno State might not even make the conference tournament this year but it's a definite possibility especially because Fresno State has been a horrific road team this season. They're 3-16 on the road.

Whatever happens this weekend, there will be no shortage of excitement and scoreboard watching around the league.
