The Daily Aggie :: 05/13/09

We've got an update on Chase Holbrook's status from his dad David. Unfortunately still no calls from the NFL however, he may see some time in the CFL. Here's his dad with more:

While it has been a frustrating few weeks since the NFL draft and no calls for Chase as a free agent invitee, He has already begun to explore other options. The CFL is one route that hopefully Chase will have a chance to extend his playing days if he can latch on with a team as a camp QB. He did have a tryout last week and is awaiting word from them as to their interest. The CFL has a unique way of teams securing players. Chase has been placed on the "negotiations list" for one CFL team and that team has his rights until they release him or sign him. If another team expresses interest the original team has a period of time in which they must sign the player or release him from that list.

We all appreciate the support that Chase has received form former coaches to team mates and fans during this past few weeks. Hopefully he will get the opportunity to continue playing as long as he so desires.

Thanks again to the Aggie fans for all of your unwavering support.

Go Aggies!

Former Aggie quarterback Buck Pierce is currently playing in the CFL for the British Columbia Lions.

The Aggie baseball team returns to action tomorrow as they chase a regular season title. We sat down and looked at the standings and the possible scenarios once again and here's what we came up with (this is not official from the WAC, this is just what we believe can happen based on our understanding of the league's rules regarding order of finish).

San Jose State (11-7) controls its own destiny as they host Nevada (10-9). If the Spartans win three of four they would clinch the regular season title and the number one overall seed in next week's conference tournament. They would share the league title with Louisiana Tech (and earn the No. 1 seed via tiebreaker) with a series split against Nevada and a split in the New Mexico State/Louisiana Tech series. Nevada, currently the third place team, will win the regular season title if they sweep San Jose State or if they take three of four from San Jose State and Louisiana Tech and New Mexico State split their series. Louisiana Tech (11-9) enters the weekend in second place and with three or four wins against New Mexico State (10-10) coupled with either a Nevada split or Nevada taking three of four in their series with San Jose State, would win the regular season title and take the top overall seed in the conference tournament. New Mexico State, the 4th place team in the league can win the league title and the top overall seed in the conference tournament if they sweep Louisiana Tech and Nevada takes three of four from San Jose State.

So as you can see, the Aggies still have a shot at an outright regular season title but must sweep and then get some help. We'll know a little more about how the final standings will shake out after tomorrow's games.

A quick volleyball update for you. We know that you're all anxious to see the 2009 schedule and while NM State has not officially released their '09 schedule, several other teams have. Hawai'i, Boise State and Louisiana Tech have all released their schedules and so we know those dates. Also, we know that the Aggies will face perennial Big 10 power Wisconsin, Big East foe Notre Dame and Big XII power Texas in the non-conference. All three of those games will happen in the span of a few days. Wisconsin and Texas have released their schedules and we know that the Aggies will face Texas on September 10th at 5:30 p.m. MT. They'll then head to South Bend to take on Wisconsin on September 12th at 3:00 p.m. MT (as part of the Notre Dame Invitational). They will face Notre Dame during that weekend as well (and possibly another school, we're not 100% sure on that though).

The conference dates that are known are as follows: at Louisiana Tech on September 27th, hosting Hawai'i on October 3rd, at Boise State on October 8th, hosting Louisiana Tech on October 10th, at Hawai'i on October 17th and hosting Boise State on November 5th.

We'll have a season wrap up interview with Coach Rodolph up tomorrow. Coach Rodolph announced the signing of two more players yesterday. That brings the total number of new players for next season to six as she adds to the four she signed in the early recruiting period last fall.
