STARKVILLE, MS - New Mexico State softball's freshman sensation Tiare Jennings was named to the 2009 Louisville Slugger/NFCA Division I All-West Region Team, the National Fastpitch Coaches Association announced, Thursday, May 14.

This is the first time in the program's history that a freshman earned this prestigious award and head coach Kathy Rodolph said that she is excited for Jennings.

"We are very proud of Tiare," Rodolph said. "Anyone who followed our program this year witnessed Tiare's phenomenal freshman year. It's not easy to break records in a program with a 35 year old history. Tiare has shattered the record book in her first year as an Aggie. We are all excited to watch what should be an incredible career continue."

Jennings' debut season is the most decorated one in NM State program history. She set five single-season records: runs scored (55), total bases (134), home runs (17), RBI (61) and slugging percentage (.779). She tied the single-season hit record (70), ranks second in batting average (.407) and is tied for third on on-base percentage (.452). She was a second team All-WAC selection and tabbed WAC Hitter of the Week honors. Jennings also consistently ranked at the top of the national statistics and currently holds the seventh-place slot in RBIs per game, 14th in home runs per game and eighth in home runs.

A total of 264 players from 121 different institutions comprise the regional teams. The WAC had 11 student-athletes earn the award.

The all-region teams were chosen by NFCA member coaches from each region, and all the honorees are now eligible for selection to the Louisville Slugger/NFCA All-America first, second or third teams.

The NFCA Division I All-American teams will be announced Wednesday, May 27.
