The Daily Aggie :: 07/22/09

Congratulations to Aggie shortstop Bryan Marquez. Bryan was named to an NM State record 6th All-American Team honor this one from the CollegeBaseballInsider.com to go along with his First Team ABCA All-American, First Team Louisville Slugger All-American, Second Team NCBWA All-American, First Team Ping!Baseball All-American and Rivals.com All-American. Marquez was also named the NCBWA District VIII Player of the Year.

Aggie head men's basketball coach Marvin Menzies posted on his Twitter account that the Aggies were close to finalizing their last non-conference game and that it would start a series with another mid-major team to go along with our series with New Mexico and UTEP. Any guesses on our part as to who this team are pure speculation but considering current economic conditions and travel costs, etc. it's probably unlikely to be a team from east. The Missouri Valley Conference signed a deal with the Mountain West to do a yearly conference showdown (in the same spirit of the annual ACC/BIg Ten and Pac-10/Big XII challenges) so it would seem unlikely to be a team from either of those conferences, although the MWC does not participate in the ESPN Bracketbusters event which gives them two additional non-conference games to schedule (remember that Bracketbusters participant are required to play a return game at the previous year's opponents home gym).

The Aggies have played a number of teams from the West Coast Conference and Big West during the past four years and the Aggies' recruiting presence on the west coast has risen dramatically under Reggie Theus' and now Marvin's tenure as the head coach which makes that scenario much more likely. We'll just have to wait and see but we won't be surprised if it's a WCC or Big West team (minus Gonzaga who is in the WCC but lives in their own high-major scheduling universe) or another team from the left coast.

One other possibility could be North Dakota. Former NM State A.D. Brian Faison is now the A.D. at North Dakota. Again, we have absolutely no idea who the opponent may be, this is just our thought process if we had to guess who the unnamed opponent is.
