Aggies Survive Scare From UTEP; Win 3-2 In Battle Of I-10 Round I.

Powered by a career night from sophomore middle hitter Kelsey Brennan the Aggies won their tenth straight match over I-10 rival UTEP. Brennan finished with 18 kills on 26 attacks with just three hitting errors (.577%) and added three solo blocks and seven block assists in the five set victory. The Aggies needed five sets to earn the win taking set one 25-19, losing set two 25-19, winning set three 25-17, losing set four 25-23 and then holding on for a 15-13 win in set five after storming out to a 7-1 lead.

Aggie freshman outside hitter Stephanie Ziegler had the match clinching kill in set five and finished with 12 kills but also recorded nine errors (.073%). Senior middle hitter Erin Birmingham added 10 kills and four block assists. Senior outside hitter Krista Altermatt finished with 17 kills and nine digs.

The Aggies also recorded four service aces on the night. The Aggies finished with a .256 hitting percentage while holding UTEP to a .125 hitting percentage. Sophomore libero Kelsi Phillips recorded 20 digs, the first Aggies to join the 20 dig club this season.

Amy Sanders led the Miners with 18 kills but also committed 11 attack errors. She added 15 kills to lead the Miners. Catherine Chavez recorded 13 kills but hit .000% for the match as she also committed 13 attack errors.

The Aggies are back in action this weekend as they take on Wisconsin and Notre Dame in South Bend, Ind. for the Notre Dame Invitational.
