Kayleigh Giddens Named WAC Volleyball Player Of The Week

Kayleigh GiddensDENVER, CO - Junior outside hitter Kayleigh Giddens has been named Western Athletic Conference Player of the Week for the week of Sept. 21-27 after leading the New Mexico State volleyball team to wins over UTEP, Utah State and Louisiana Tech.

Giddens (Lubbock, Texas) marked 47 kills, 33 digs, three blocks and three service aces as the Aggies went 3-0 on the week. She averaged 4.27 kills and 3.00 digs per set, which was well above her season averages. After sitting out a couple of matches she is back in form as she is now third in the league in kills per set with 3.62.

"I feel pretty good and it was an important week for us last week so I knew I had to step up my play," Giddens said. "The team is coming together at the right time and my teammates, like Whitney Woods, also played well last week."

Giddens also posted her first two double-doubles of her career when she tallied 14 kills and 14 digs to lead the Aggies to a 3-1 victory over rival UTEP before marking 19 kills and 13 digs against a much improved Louisiana Tech team. In a conference opening sweep over Utah State, Giddens had a match-high 14 kills in a sweep of Utah State to open WAC play.

In her first season with NM State, Giddens is averaging 3.62 kills per set and posted a career-high of 21 kills in the first match of the year, which was against Southern Methodist University, Aug. 28 in the Mean Green Volleyball Classic. Giddens also averages 1.84 digs per set and has tallied 41 total blocks on the season.

The Aggies are back in Las Cruces this for two home matches with the first against Nevada, Thursday, Oct. 1 at 7pm before facing No. 4 Hawai'i, Saturday, Oct. 3 in the Pan American Center.
