Don't look now but the New Mexico State Aggie soccer team is in SOLO first place in the WAC after the opening weekend of play. The Aggies gutted out two victories over the weekend. An overtime win against Boise State in the 91st minute of play was followed up by a wild offensive flurry by the Aggies in a 12-minute span in the second half of play on Sunday against Idaho to rally from a 2-0 deficit to win 3-2. The Aggies are now 7-5 on the season, more importantly they are 2-0 in the WAC and have earned six points. Just a refresher for WAC women's soccer, a win is worth three points, a tie is worth one point and of course a loss is worth nothing but heartbreak and probably an extra hard week of practice.

Katie GraulWe think that the Aggies' Lauren Cope should earn WAC Offensive Player of the Week and the Katie Graul ought to earn WAC Defender of the Week. If the Aggies do not sweep this week's awards after their 2-0 start, something is definitely wrong. Cope scored the golden goal on Friday night which also happened to be her first career goal. On Sunday afternoon she scored the tying goal, the Aggies' second of the afternoon and finished the weekend with four points. Katie Graul recorded a shutout victory on Friday night that included six saves and then yesterday afternoon she recorded nine saves.

We talked with Coach Needham after yesterday's match about the composure his team has shown, particularly yesterday during the comeback. We remarked to him that generally you might expect to see that kind of composure from a junior or senior-laden squad but this is a group that in almost entirely freshmen. The only upper classmen are midfielder Baili Foutz (JR), defender Nina Yanes (JR) and goal keeper Katie Graul (SR). He had a slightly different take on the situation. "Older experienced players deal with it a different way. They say, "Man, we're down 2-0" and they start thinking about that. Our kids kind of take the, 'Let's go out there and do it and see what happens. If we win we win if we lose we lose.'" He added, "That's a pretty dangerous attitude to have. The whole year we've talked about one step at a time, no step is bigger than the other, it's the same soccer game you've played your whole life. Just enjoy it and do what you've got to do. That kind of attitude, we can take that forward into future years and just play free. The ability to just let things go off your shoulders a little bit and it makes you pretty dangerous."
