Aggie Women's Basketball Falls To UNM 92-85

LAS CRUCES, N.M. - The New Mexico State women’s basketball team fell to the New Mexico Lobos Wednesday night, 92-85, in the Pan American Center. The Aggies had four players in double figures, as they drop to 4-3 on the season. The Lobos improve to 5-2 on the year.

The Aggies were led by Jasmine Lowe, who scored a career-high 29 points, on 9-of-15 shooting from the field, hitting 5-of-6 from the 3-point line. Crystal Boyd added 16 points and 11 boards for the Aggies, as Tabytha Wampler chipped in 15 and Kaitlyn Soto dropped in 11.

The Aggies shot 43.5 percent from the floor on the night and 95 percent from the free throw line, hitting 22-of-23.

The Aggies opened the half by extending their lead to five points at 43-38, with 17:20 to go in the game. A three point play and a break-a-way lay-up tied the game at 43-43 with 16:35 remaining. UNM then hit a long 3-point bucket to take the lead at 46-43 with 15:46 left in the game.

Out of a timeout by the Aggies, Wampler drove the lane and was fouled, making the bucket, cutting the lead to one as she stepped to the line. Wampler hit the free throw to tie the game at 46 with 15:46 to go in the game. The Lobos responded with a 3-point basket to go back up 49-46.

Three Aggie lay-ups brought the score to 52-51 in NM State’s favor with 13:12 remaining in the game. Both teams would match shot for shot on the next few trips down the court, as UNM held a one point lead at 58-57, with 11:12 to go in the game.

The Lobos extended their lead to four at 61-57, before Soto and Lowe hit two free throws a piece, to tie the game at 61-61, with 10:23 left in the game. The Lobos would maintain a two point lead with 6:53 to go, at 67-65, after both teams recorded some hard fought baskets.

UNM then went on an 11-2 run to take its lead to 78-67 with 3:34 left on the clock in the second half. The Aggies would cut the Lobo lead to five, at 82-77, with 48 seconds to go. Lowe then nailed a 3-point basket to cut the lead to four, at 84-80, with 40 seconds remaining. The Aggies would foul immediately and put the Lobos back at the line.

The Lobos would hit one of two to go back up five, at 85-80. NM State then missed a 3-point attempt from the corner and it was forced to foul. Lowe would commit the intentional foul. UNM hit one of two again, but got the ball back, hitting a lay-up to go back up by eight, at 88-80, with less than 30 seconds remaining.

Corbett hit a 3-point basket to make the score 88-83 but having to foul after every possession was too much for them to overcome as NM State fell 92-85 to New Mexico.

Just two points separated the Aggies and Lobos after the first four minutes of the game, as UNM held a slim 10-8 lead with 15:23 to go in the half. Both teams would go inside to their post players early. The Lobos would extend their lead by four at 14-10, before Lowe hit her second 3-point basket of the night, cutting the lead to one at 14-13.

After tying the game at 16, Boyd hit a lay-up out of the 12 minute timeout to give NM State the lead at 18-16. The Aggies extended their lead to five after a 3-point play the hard way by Boyd, as NM State led 25-20 with 9:32 to go in the half.

A 3-pointer by Lowe, her third of the game, gave NM State a 30-22 lead with 7:26 left in the half. UNM put together a 9-0 run to take a one point lead at 31-30, with 4:04 remaining in the first half. Lowe then hit a long jumper to put NM State back up by one at 32-31. The Lobos would answer right back with five straight points to take the lead back at 36-32 with 2:46 to go in the half.

The Aggies tied the game at 36, with 1:10 to go after four straight free throws. Soto hit a fast break lay-up with seven seconds left in the half to give the Aggies a 36-34 lead going into the locker room.

Lowe led the Aggies with 15 points, hitting three 3-point baskets and by shooting 4-of-8 from the floor. Wampler added 10 points for the Aggies. The Aggies shot 37.1 percent from the floor in the first half and hit 8-of-9 from the charity stripe. NM State would out rebound the Lobos 20 to 17 in the half.

The Aggies are back in action to take on North Dakota State, Saturday, Dec. 12, at 8 p.m.
