The Daily Aggie :: 12/20/09

Tabytha WamplerThe Aggie women's basketball team will look to break a 13 game losing streak to the Lobos in The Pit. The last time the Aggies won was back on December 22, 1995, a 78-73 victory. Since then the Lobos have not only dominated the series in Albuquerque but they've dominated the series overall winning 26 of the past 27 meetings. In the first game the Aggies did a good job on Lobo point guard Amy Beggin but Lauren Taylor and Sarah Halasz combined for 40. That game saw Jasmine Lowe score 29 points for the Aggies in the 92-85 loss.

It was also a game that the Aggies felt like they let slip away. The Aggies have an advantage in the guard department but the Lobos have the advantage in the post department and it will be very important for Tabytha Wampler to stay out of foul trouble for the Aggies. It will also be important to get some good minutes from freshmen Chrissy Fletcher and Malia Magazzeni. We would expect to see better defense from both sides and neither coach was probably too pleased with allowing the other to score so many points (although it was fun to watch for fans).

It will be a new and different experience for a lot of new Aggie players as well. The Pit is a venue unlike most in women's college basketball. It will be the only time this season that the Aggies will play in front of a crowd that could range from 8,000 to 10,000 people (you read that correctly, 8,000 to 10,000 people).

The Aggies will need to play poised and take the Lobo fans out of the game early. The Aggies can do that if they are able to come out of the gate and hit shots and stifle the Lobos. UNM has showed some vulnerability this season on their home court. They have had two rare home losses in non-conference. One to an outstanding Oklahoma State team but they also had a bit of a shocker against Toledo.

Today's game is set to tip off at 2:00 p.m. MT and can be seen in Albuquerque on My50 TV. If you live in Albuquerque, buy a ticket and get out to the game and cheer on the Aggies. They will need all the crimson support they can get today. Fans in Las Cruces can listen to the game on KSNM AM 570 with Kyle Doperalski making the call. Streaming audio will also be available via Aggie Access (subscription required).
