The Daily Aggie :: 12/23/09

The Aggie women's basketball team picked up a decisive 76-54 victory over Alcorn State on Tuesday night and avoided a repeat performance of the North Dakota game in which the Aggies did not play well against a winless squad. The Aggies lead early in the game but the Braves took a 15-13 lead with just over 12 minutes left in the first half. The Aggies would respond and finish the half on an 19-6 run to take an 11 point lead of 32-21 into the halftime break. The Aggies continued to build on their lead and led by as many as 23 with 5:31 left to play as they took the 21 point victory. The final margin of victory could have been larger but the Aggies hit only 13-of-22 free throws in the first half (59.1 percent). Alcorn State also struggled from the free throw line in the first half hitting just 4-of-14 attempts (28.6 percent). Madison Spence led the Aggies with 15 points, six assists and three rebounds. Crystal Boyd recorded a double-double with 13 points and 12 rebounds. Boyd also had four steals and two blocks.

The Aggies are now 7-4 on the season and will face UTEP on Monday afternoon down in El Paso.

The Aggie men's basketball team is back in action tonight as they host Texas Southern. The Tigers are 4-6 on the season but are a dangerous team. They boast a win over Idaho and have had close games against Colorado and Northern Colorado (who beat Hawai'i and hammered an improved San Jose State squad). The Tigers are led by Travele Jones, Junior Treasure and Deandre Hall. Jones is averaging 15 points per game, Treasure 14 points per game and Hall 13 points per game. As Coach Menzies mentioned in this week's interview the Tigers create a lot of turnovers. They're averaging 9.4 steals per game. They are a decent three point shooting team hitting 35.6 percent of their attempts but don't really have a designated sharpshooter. They are not a particularly good free throw shooting team hitting just 65.7 percent of their free throws (134-of-204).

The Aggies will need to bring a solid effort to avoid the upset against the Tigers. If the Aggies play to the level that they're capable of they should come out of this game with a win. However, if they play sloppy, don't take care of the ball they will find themselves in a fight with the Tigers.

Today's game tips off at 7:00 p.m. in the Pan Am and radio coverage will be available on the Aggie Sports Network. Streaming audio and streaming video will be available via Aggie Access (subscription required).
