The Daily Aggie :: 12/28/09

The Aggie women's basketball team takes on UTEP today at 3:00 p.m. in El Paso as they return from a six day break for the holidays. The Aggies beat UTEP 13 days ago in the Pan Am and have won two straight in the series. However, the Aggies have not won in El Paso since 2002, a 61-60 victory. The Aggies jumped out to a 22 point lead shortly after halftime but UTEP clawed all the way back and took the lead before the Aggies regained the lead and held on down the stretch for a 67-55 victory. UTEP is still led by senior guard Jareica Hughes who is averaging 12.6 points per game. Sviatlana Trukshanina hit 3-of-5 three pointers in the first meeting against the Aggies, even though NM State held the Miners well below their season average from behind the three point arc. UTEP is a 38.1 percent three point shooting team and Jareica Hughes and Dietra Caldwell are their best two three point shooters. However, according to a report by the El Paso Times' Bret Bloomquist, the Miners could be playing without both Jareica Hughes (separated shoulder) and possibly Timika Williams as well (also due to injury).

For the Aggies, they have been a good three point shooting team as well hitting 35.4 percent of their three pointers. Jasmine Lowe has the best percentage at 48.4 percent (15-of-31), Danisha Corbett has taken the most three point attempts with 66 and has hit 21 of them (31.8 percent), Madison Spence is 11-of-34 from three point distance and Kaitlyn Soto has been deadly accurate on the rare occasion she has taken a three point shot (7-of-10).

The Aggies outrebounded UTEP on the boards in the first meeting and that was a big key to their victory. If they can do that again and hold UTEP below their three point shooting average, they have a great shot at winning this game. If it's a close game down the stretch as it has been the past two seasons in El Paso, the Aggies have the decided advantage from the free throw stripe. The Aggies are hitting 76.5 percent of their free throws while UTEP is hitting just 60.6 percent of their free throws (a little surprising considering they have some good shooters on the squad).

Today's game is scheduled for a 3:00 p.m. tip-off and Live Stats will be available for today's game. Streaming video is also available for the game via the UTEP athletic website for $9.95. Streaming audio will be available for Aggie fans via Aggie Access (subscription required) and the game can also be heard on KSNM AM 570 in Las Cruces.

The Aggie men's basketball team wraps up the non-conference portion of the schedule tonight at 7:00 p.m. as they take on Prairie View A&M. The Aggies are riding a three game win streak and can move above .500 for the first time this season with a win. Wendell McKines has made an immediate impact on the team since his return two games ago. He is averaging 13 points and 8.5 rebounds per game. Perhaps more impressively however, he is averaging six assists per game. The Aggie backcourt duo of Jahmar Young and Jonathan Gibson have been on fire during the three game winning streak. Young has put together games of 27, 22 and 26 points. Gibson has been equally effective putting up games of 24, 23 and 24 points.

Hamidu Rahman's status for today's game is still up in the air. He did not play in the Aggies' win over Texas Southern last week. The Panthers are 5-5 on the season but have played a couple of good teams in Cincinnati and Oklahoma State. The Panthers lost by just seven at Cincinnati. Darnell Hugee leads the Panthers is scoring at 14.1 points per game. Michael Griffin is averaging 10.4 points per game and the Panthers have three other players averaging just over seven points per game.

Today's game is scheduled for a 7:00 p.m. tip-off. Streaming audio and video will be available for today's game via Aggie Access (subscription required). The game can be heard on the radio on the Aggie Sports Network.
