TUCSON, AZ - The New Mexico State swimming and diving team challenged a pair of Pac-10 teams, Friday, Jan. 8 at Tucson, Ariz. The Aggies fell to Oregon State, 138-123, and No. 2 Arizona, 204-57, in the double-dual meet.

"It was exciting and heartbreaking to battle Oregon State and come so close," head coach Rick Pratt said. "We had some beat-up swimmers from this week of training, however, we still had several season bests and some great efforts."

"It will be nice to start classes next week and get back to a normal routine," he said. "We need to be better when we head to Boise State in three weeks."

In the 1,000 free, sophomore Brittney Moore and senior Liz Thomson scored for NM State in third and fourth place, respectively. Moore, freshman Haley Gansneder and Thomson also provided points in the 500 free taking second, third and fourth.

Sophomore Maria Spies had a solid meet with a second-place finish in the 200 breast and a fourth-place showing in the 100 breast. Junior Kelly Runestrand also challenged in the breaststroke events with fifth in the 200 and sixth in the 100.

Senior Meghann Percy recorded a team-best fourth-place showing in the 100 back as freshman Beth Cate led the way with fifth in the 200 individual medley and sixth in the 200 butterfly.

In the sprint freestyle races, junior Kelly Conrad and senior Tessa Bain paced the Aggies in the 50 free in sixth and seventh, respectively. Additionally, Conrad claimed fifth in the 100 free.

The Aggies return to WAC action at Boise State, Jan. 30, in preparation for the conference meet, Feb. 24-27.
