The Daily Aggie :: 01/12/10

The Aggie men's basketball team completed an impressive, hard-fought sweep of their Idaho road trip with a 75-72 win last night. The win over the Vandals saw Jahmar Young score 32 points, 23 in the second half and come up just one shy of his career-best 33 which he set against Boise State at Taco Bell Arena during his freshman season. We said yesterday that the game would come down to turnovers, three point shooting and free throw shooting. The three point shooting was a wash as both teams hit six threes. The keys did indeed turn out to be free throw shooting and turnovers. The Vandals stayed in the game because of free throw shooting. They hit 14-of-19 free throws in the second half but the Aggies, who struggled from the stripe against Boise State, were a solid 9-of-12 in the second half and 6-of-6 during the final 27 seconds at which point the Aggies were clinging to a two point lead. The turnover battle was also huge as the Aggies had just 10 turnovers and only four in the second half while Idaho had 16.

The three point victory also continued the string of close games played in Moscow. The Aggies have still not won by more than 10 points in Moscow since joining the WAC. But as Coach Menzies has said before, whether you win by 100 or you win by one, it's still a 'W'.

The Aggies are now 3-1 in conference play and with the road sweep, they've effectively erased the Nevada loss at home. The Aggies will take on 3-0 Fresno State on Saturday in the only remaining home game this month. Fresno State has beaten Boise State, Hawai'i and San Jose State to start the season but the real test comes over the next four games as the Bulldogs visit league leading Louisiana Tech on Thursday night in a battle of the two conference unbeatens, then at the Aggies on Saturday followed by home games with Utah State and Nevada next week.

The Aggies' January is also interesting as they hit the road for three games to close out the month of January. After Saturday night the Aggie will travel to Hawai'i, San Jose State and Louisiana Tech.
