The Daily Aggie :: 01/16/10

The Aggie men's and women's basketball teams are back in action tonight. The women will tip off in Ruston at 6:00 p.m. MT as they take on Louisiana Tech who is 10-4 on the season and 1-1 in league play. The Lady Techsters are 0-1 at home in league play this season as they lost to Utah State on opening night. It should be a wild high-scoring affair as the two teams are first and second in the league in scoring. The Lady Techsters average 77.3 points per game while the Aggies average 71.9 points per game. Shanavia Dowdell leads the way for La. Tech averaging 17.6 points and 10.6 rebounds per game and is hitting 55 percent of her shots from the field. It'll be a stiff challenge for the Aggie interior defense. Also providing an interior challenge for the Aggies will be Adrienne Johnson who is averaging 16.6 points and 6.7 rebounds per game and she has 26 blocks on the season.

The Aggies will need to rebound the ball well tonight and not give up too many second chance opportunities to Louisiana Tech. It will certainly be a contrast in styles as the Aggies are a very guard oriented team while Louisiana Tech is a very post oriented team. Look for Jasmine Lowe to get back on track after her 4-of-18 performance against Fresno State. Crystal Boyd could have a big game as well, Louisiana Tech recruited her out of high school and as we have seen already against Kansas, Crystal plays well against the big name teams.

Tonight's game tips off at 6:00 p.m. MT and can be heard on KSNM AM 570 with Kyle Doperalski calling the action. Streaming audio is also available via Aggie Access.

The Aggie men's team plays their final January home game hosting Fresno State tonight. The Bulldogs and Aggies are tied for second place in the WAC at 3-1 and this is an important game in terms of keeping up with league leader Louisiana Tech who shows no signs of letting up at 5-0 in the WAC.

The Bulldogs lost to Louisiana Tech on Thursday night but did so playing short-handed as starting point guard Steven Shepp did not travel with the team to Ruston staying in Fresno to take care of some academic business. Without Shepp the Bulldogs trail La. Tech by 20 in the second half but cut the lead down to just six points with just over three minutes left to play before falling by eight, 81-73.

Obviously every fan knows or should know about Fresno State's Paul George. He's an NBA talent and leads the team in scoring and rebounding. George is averaging 17 points and 7.6 rebounds per game and has led the team in scoring eight times. He has posted a season high 29 points twice this season. His partner in crime is Sylvester Seay is averaging 16.1 points and 5.6 rebounds per game.

The Bulldogs do have balance as Greg Smith and Mike Ladd can also get hot. Ladd averages 9.6 points per game but has scored 18 this season. Smith averages 11.6 points per game but has had game high of 24 this season.

The Bulldogs are averaging 75.5 points per game in league play, almost 6.5 points higher than their average in the non-conference. The Aggies must keep Fresno State off the free throw line. The Bulldogs have gotten to the line a whopping 101 times in just four games. The Aggies, by contrast, have gotten to the line just 57 times in four games. Neither team has shot their free throws particularly well in conference play. The Aggies are hitting just 64.9 percent of their free throws while Fresno State has hit just 63.4 percent.

Tonight's game tips off at 7:00 p.m. and can be seen on AggieVision. Fans can listen to the game on the Aggie Sports Network and streaming audio and video will be available via Aggie Access. Tonight's game will also be available online via ESPN360.
