Walker Announces Hiring Of Defensive Backs Coach

LAS CRUCES, N.M. - New Mexico State head football coach DeWayne Walker announced Friday afternoon that Will Martin has been hired as the Aggies’ new defensive back coach for the 2010 season. Most recently, Martin was the assistant head coach/defensive coordinator at College of the Desert in 2009.

"Martin and I go way back when he used to work my defensive back camps when I was in the NFL and I think he is the type of guy that will bring a lot of experience as a former defensive coordinator," Walker said. "He kind of reminds me of how I got my career started in the junior college ranks. Martin understands our type of defense and what we like to do from a fundamental standpoint. I think this will be a smooth transition with him working with coach Rutenberg to continue to improve our secondary."

Prior to his defensive coordinator duties at College of the Desert, Martin was the defensive coordinator and recruiting coordinator for the school from 2006-08. In 2006, Martin was also with the San Diego Chargers as a defensive backs intern.

Before coming to College of the Desert, Martin was the defensive backs coach for Riverside Community College from 2003-06. Prior to his stint at Riverside, he was the head coach at Moreno Valley High School from 2000-03.

He was the defensive coordinator coach at A.B. Miller High School (1998-2000) and a secondary coach at J.W. North High School (1997). Martin’s first stint at College of the Desert was from 1995-97, as the s secondary coach. Prior to that, Martin was defensive coordinator at Ramona High School in 1994.
