Late Free Throws Push Aggie Women Past Utah State 56-55

Jasmine Lowe hit a pair of free throws with nine seconds left to help New Mexico State earn a hard fought victory over Utah State on Saturday afternoon. The Aggies scored the games first points taking an early 2-0 lead but fell behind by 10 points as Utah State outscored the Aggies 17-5 over the next 13 minutes of the game as they held a 17-7 lead with 7:36 left to play in the first half.

Danisha Corbett buried a three pointer with 7:22 sparked a 7-0 run that brought the Aggies to within three at 17-14. The Aggies finished the half on an 11-5 run to take a three point lead into the break.

The Aggies scored the first points of the second half to take a five point lead at 27-22. The Aggies would build the lead to nine points and led 46-37 after a pair of free throws by Jasmine Lowe with 8:16 remaining. However, on the ensuing possession Utah State's Banna Diop naied a three pointer to cut the Aggie lead to six at 46-40. The Aggies would take a 48-40 lead into the under eight minute media timeout with 5:28 left to play. Coming out of the timeout Utah State's Banna Diop hit a pair of free throws to once again cut the lead to six points.

The Aggies would lead Utah State by just three with two minutes left at 51-48. With 1:17 left to Danisha Corbett came up with a steal which led to a Crystal Boyd layup. Boyd was fouled on the play and hit the free throw to give the Aggies a six point lead at 54-48 with 53 seconds remaining. Utah State's Alice Coddington hit a layup with 46 seconds left to cut the NM State lead to four with 43 seconds left and Coddington immediately fouled Madison Spence. Spence went to the line for a one-and-one but missed the front end and Utah State grabbed the rebound.

Utah State's Banna Diop missed a three pointer but LaCale Pringle Buchanan grabbed the offensive rebound and was fouled by Crystal Boyd. Pringle-Bushman hit both free throws to cut the NM State lead to just two with 30 seconds left. Utah State fouled Jasmine Lowe and put her on the line for a one-and-one but she also missed the front end but this time Crystal Boyd grabbed the offensive rebound and the Aggies called a quick 30-second timeout.

On the inbounds play the Aggies got the ball in to Tabytha Wampler and she was quickly fouled with 21 seconds remaining. However, she too would miss the front end of a one-and-one and Utah State's Banna Diop grabbed the rebound. Diop then nailed a three pointer with 16 seconds left to give Utah State their first lead of the half at 55-54. NM State called a quick 30-second timeout and set up their play. After the Aggies inbounded the ball Jasmine Lowe drove to the basket and was fouled. This time Lowe nailed both free throws giving the Aggies a 56-55 lead.

Utah State's Alice Coddington missed a layup with one second remaining and Jasmine Lowe grabbed the rebound to preserve the Aggie win.

Crystal Boyd led all scorers with 23 points and added 11 rebounds for a double-double. The Aggies got nine points each from Jasmine Lowe, Danisha Corbett and Madison Spence. Tabytha Wampler added four points. Utah State was led by Amber White who scored 18 points and grabbed 10 rebounds. Alice Coddington added 13 points for the UtAgs.

New Mexico State shot just 29 percent in the game hitting 18-of-62 shots and 5-of-21 three pointers. Utah State didn't fare much better hitting 18-of-57 shots (31.6 percent) and was 6-of-15 from behind the three point arc. Both teams shot free throws very well as the Aggies finished 15-of-19 (78.9 percent) and Utah State hit 13-of-15 (86.7 percent). Utah State outrebounded the Aggies 47-41 with each team grabbing 13 offensive rebounds. The Aggies forced 23 Utah State turnovers and converted them into 23 points. The Aggies got just two bench points and were outscored 17-2 in that category.

The Aggies improve to 13-7 overall and 3-3 in league play with the win while Utah State drops to 10-9 and 2-4 in league play.
