Lawrence Wins Gold At WAC Championships; Aggies Move Into Third

SAN ANTONIO, TX - Junior Alannah Lawrence won top honors in the 100 breaststroke for the New Mexico State swimming and diving team on the third day of the 2010 WAC Championship, Friday, Feb. 25, at the Josh Davis Natatorium in San Antonio, Texas.

She led the Aggies with an NCAA ‘B’ cut (1:02.49). Sophomore Maria Spies followed in fourth (1:03.49) while junior Kelly Runestrand was seventh (1:04.52).

For the second consecutive day, a school record fell when junior Kelly Conrad broke the record in the 200 free with her performance in the preliminaries (1:51. 39). In the finals, Conrad finished seventh while freshman Jessi Vlasic scored in eighth place.

In the 400 individual medley, senior Liz Thomson paced the Aggies with a fourth-place showing (4:26.28). Freshman Morgan Kimminau and sophomore Brittney Moore also provided points in seventh and 16th place, respectively.

The Aggies had three swimmers score in the 100 butterfly with freshman Beth Cate leading the way taking sixth. Freshman Hannah Ferrin followed in 11th and senior Victoria Eickerman was 15th.

Senior Tessa Bain recorded NM State’s best time in the 100 back in eighth while senior Meghann Percy was 10th and Alex Fenton was 12th.

The Aggies ended the session with fifth place in the 400-medley relay with the team of Percy, Lawrence, Cate and Conrad. NM State is currently in third place in the team standing with 320 points.

The meet concludes Saturday with the 200 back, 100 free, 200 breaststroke, 200 butterfly, 3-meter springboard, 1,650 free and 400-free relay.
