SAN ANTONIO, TX - The New Mexico State swimming and diving team won a pair of individual titles on the fourth and final day of the WAC Championship, Saturday, Feb. 27, at the Josh Davis Natatorium in San Antonio, Texas. The Aggies finished in second place in the team standings with 466 points, which is the team’s best finish in school history.

Senior Liz Thomson won the 1,650 free (16:58.60) and sophomore Maria Spies earned top honors in the 200 breaststroke (2:16.06). For the second consecutive year, head coach Rick Pratt was named WAC Coach of the Year.

“This was our best session and we have amazing swims,” Pratt said. “It was by far not a perfect meet, and not everyone swam as fast as we would have liked, but everyone stayed positive and came together to finish in second. This really showed the character of our team. Everything fell into place and I’m extremely proud of them.”

The Aggies dominated in the distance freestyle event with five swimmers in the top 12. After Thomson, freshman Jessi Vlasic finished fourth and sophomore Brittney Moore was sixth. Sophomores Ana Smith and Rachelle Bassen claimed ninth and 12th place, respectively. In the 200 breaststroke, junior Kelly Runestrand scored in fourth place and junior Alannah Lawrence posted a ninth-place showing.

In the 100 free, junior Kelly Conrad was seventh, and freshman Morgan Kimminau claimed seventh in the 200 back. The Aggies had three swimmers provide points in the 200 butterfly with freshman Beth Cate leading the way in ninth. Senior Victoria Eickerman was 12th and Bassen earned 15th place.

The Aggies ended the meet with a fifth-place showing in the 400-free relay with the team of Conrad, freshman Kelsey Konicke, freshman Alex Fenton and Thomson.
