Aggie junior shortstop Ryan Aguayo has been named to the 2010 College Baseball Foundation Brooks Wallace Award watch list. Aguayo took over the position after All-American Bryan Marquez graduated and has excelled. The 5'9" shortstop from Pico Rivera, Calif. is second on the team in batting average hitting .419 in 93 at-bats. Aguayo has 39 hits including eight doubles, two triples and eight home runs. He has a slugging percentage of .806 and an On Base Percentage of .496.
Defensively Aguayo has also been solid posting 80 assists and committing just nine errors with a fielding percentage of .929. He has played in all 23 games this season and has started 21 of those 23 games.
"He's not a prototypical shortstop, kind of like [Bryan] Marquez, he doesn't grade out, doesn't have a great arm, doesn't run real well but he can just play," said head coach Rocky Ward. "When the uniforms were put on, he became twice the player. You never know when that's gonna happen, you hope that a couple of your kids are going to do that. When they turn the lights on they become great players and that's what Ryan has done. He's really been a great guy for us."
The Wallace Award, sponsored by Mizuno, recognizes the nation’s top shortstop and will be presented on July 2 in Lubbock, Texas, as part of the College Baseball Awards Show.
Wallace Award committee co-chairs Kevin Dunagan and Tyler Young worked closely with the staff at the College Baseball Blog to ensure the best Division I shortstops were included. “There are players on the list with some very impressive statistics,” Dunagan said. “The College Baseball
Blog was very helpful in making sure that we found the outstanding candidates regardless of school or conference.”
The Brooks Wallace Award is presented annually by the College Baseball Foundation to honor the nation’s most outstanding shortstop. The award is a tribute to Brooks Wallace, a slick fielding shortstop that played at Texas Tech University, from 1977 to 1980 and led that team to its first ever trip to the Southwest Conference championship.
