Matt ChristianThe Aggie football team jumped out to a 14-point lead at halftime but then fell behind 27-23 before rallying for a dramatic 29-27 victory as time expired. Matt Christian found Taveon Rogers from eight yards out for the game-winning touchdown. It was the second touchdown connection between Christian and Rogers on the day.

The Aggies and Spartans combined for 980 yards of total offense as New Mexico State had a balanced attack rushing for 180 yards and passing for 259. Matt Christian finished the day 23-of-44 with two touchdowns and no interceptions, however, it was a fumble by Christian late that nearly cost the Aggies the football game.

With the Aggies down 27-23 and under four minutes to play the Aggies had a 2nd and 20 at their own 34 yard line. Christian kept the ball and rushed ahead for five yards but fumbled as he was tackled by SJSU's Vincent Abbott. Travis Johnson recovered the ball at the Aggies' 40 yard line and it looked like the Aggies' Homecoming hopes would be dashed. However, the Aggie defense rose to the occasion as they forced a field goal attempt by SJSU kicker Harrison Waid after the Spartans had driven down to the Aggies' 21 yard line. Waid, who had missed on two earlier field goals, missed his third field goal of the day.

Christian and the Aggies took over at their own 21 yard line with just 52 seconds left to play. On first and 10 Christian delivered a 34-yard strike to Marcus Allen to the Spartan 45 yard line. On the very next play Christian would hook up with tight end Kyle Nelson for a 19 yard gain down to the Spartans' 26. After an incompletion, Christian would again find Allen for 18 yards down to the Spartans' eight yard line. After three consecutive incompletions, the Aggies were faced with a fourth down, do-or-die situation with less than four seconds left to play. Christian took the snap, rolled to his right and fired a pass on the run from the right hashmark as he found Taveon Rogers rolling across the right side of the endzone. Rogers would haul in the pass with a Spartan defender draped over him and was immediately mobbed by his teammates on the ground.

The Aggies would take a knee on the extra point attempt to end the game and cap the victory.

The Spartans would score on their first possession driving eight plays and 41 yards to take a 3-0 lead. The Aggies would answer with a five play, 68 yard drive culminating with a 34-yard touchdown strike from Christian to Rogers putting the Aggies up 7-3. The Spartans would drive 10 plays and 41 yards down to the Aggies' 28 yard line but the field goal attempt by Harrison Waid would miss.

The Aggies would go ahead 14-3 early in the second quarter as they drove 68 yards on 10 plays with Matt Christian scrambling from 28 yards out down the sideline and in for a diving touchdown.

Harrison Waid would miss his second field goal of the half as the Spartans drove from their own 28 yard line down to the Aggies' 21 after SJSU quarterback Jordan La Secla hooked up with Noel Grigsby for a 41-yard completion.

With the Aggies ahead 14-3, they would take possession with 4:55 left in the first half and go on a 13 play, 55 yard drive that would end in a career-long 42-yard field goal by Tyler Stampler as time expired.

The second half saw the Spartans take the ball and go 75 yards in two plays thanks to a 75-yard touchdown pass from Jordan La Secla to Brandon Rutley on a little dump-off pass. The extra point cut the Aggies' lead to 17-10. After an Aggie punt, the Spartans would drive down to the Aggie 28 yard line on a 10-play, 52 yard drive. The Spartans would have to settle for a field goal as Waid hit a 45 yarded to cut the Aggies' lead to 17-13.

The third quarter would end with the Aggies in possession of the ball and a 17-13 lead. The Aggies would drive down to the Spartans' eight yard line but would settle for a 25-yard field goal to put them back up by a touchdown at 20-13.

The Spartans would quickly erase the Aggies' lead as Jordan La Secla would hit Chandler Jones for 53 yards getting the ball down to the Aggies' 22 yard line. Three plays later La Secla would find Noel Grigsby for a 12 yard touchdown pass to tie the game at 20-20.

The Aggies would respond again as they would get put together a nine play, 33 yard field goal drive to go back on top 23-20 with 7:11 left to play.

San Jose State would take the ball at their own 20 and drive 80 yards in eight plays culminating with a 31-yard touchdown pass from La Secla to Jalal Beauchman. The extra point gave the Spartans a 27-23 lead with just under four minutes left to play.

The Aggies' Matt Christian would fumble on the Aggies' ensuing drive but after a defensive stand an Harrison Waid's third missed field goal of the day, Matt Christian would redeem himself driving the Aggies 79 yards in just 52 seconds for the game-winning touchdown.

Taveon Rogers finished the day with five catches for 90 yards and two touchdowns. Marcus Allen finished with seven receptions for 89 yards, Kyle Nelson had three receptions including one on the final drive for a total of 35 yards.

Kenny Turner ran 18 times for 74 yards and caught five passes for an additional 32 yards. Matt Christian ran 12 times for 74 yards including the 28-yard touchdown scamper.

Jordan La Secla had an outstanding day for the Spartans completing 22-of-35 passes for 361 yards and three touchdowns. Jalal Beauchman caught nine passes for 113 yards and a touchdown, Noel Grigsby caught six passes for 83 yards and a touchdown, Chandler Jones caught three passes for 78 yards and Brandon Rutley caught two passes for 74 yards and a touchdown.

The victory improves the Aggies' record to 2-6 overall and 1-3 in WAC play while San Jose State falls to 1-7 overall and 0-4 in WAC play.

The Aggies return to the road for a matchup with Utah State next Saturday.
