Aggies Rally To Force Overtime And Defeat UTEP 80-75

A late three by Erica Sanchez in regulation and perfect free throw shooting by Camila Rosen and Tabytha Wampler in overtime helped lead the Aggies to their fourth victory in a row over I-10 rival UTEP. Madison Spence led the Aggies with 18 points, six rebounds, seven assists and six steals in 38 minutes.

The Aggies fell behind early 6-0 but a jumper by Tabytha Wampler at the 17:51 mark broke the seal for New Mexico State. The early part of the game would see solid defense and cold shooting by both teams as the game would be tied 10-10 at the under 12 minute media timeout. The score would remain 10-10 until Kristine Vittola would hit a jumper with 9:21 left to play in the half to give UTEP a 12-10 lead. Erica Sanchez would answer seconds later with a jumper to tie the score at 12-12 with just over 9:00 left to play. The score would remain tied at 12 until the 5:32 mark when UTEP's Anete Steinberga would hit one of two free throws to give UTEP a 13-12 lead.

The Aggies would fall behind 18-12 after UTEP's Gloria Brown hit a pair of free throws with 3:25 left in the half but a quick three by Jasmine Lowe would get the Aggie offense back on the board and cut the UTEP lead to just three at 18-15. Danisha Corbett would hit a pair of free throws with just over two minutes left in the half to draw the Aggies to within a point at 20-19 and the Aggies would take their first lead of the game just a few seconds later as freshman Andrea Chenier would get a steal and a breakaway layup to put the Aggies up 21-20 with 1:45 left in the half. The lead was short-lived as UTEP scored two quick baskets to take a 24-21 lead. The Miner lead would grow to five points at 26-21 after a pair of free throws by Steinberga but Madison Spence would bury a three from the corner with three seconds remaining before halftime to draw the Aggies to within a deuce at 26-24.

The Aggies would strike first in the second half tying the game at 26 as Tabytha Wampler would hit a jumper and the Aggies would take a 30-26 lead with just two minutes into the half after a jumper by Madison Spence. The Miners would answer with an 8-0 run to take a 34-30 lead with 16 minutes left to play. The Aggies would answer with a 6-0 run to regain the lead 36-34 as Jasmine Lowe would get a break-away layup with 14:26 left to play. The two teams would battle back and forth with UTEP holding a slim 42-41 advantage with 11:16 left to play but with the game tied at 42, the Miners would go on an 8-0 run to grab a 50-42 lead with 8:48 left to play.

Danisha Corbett would bury a three pointer to draw the Aggies back to within five with 8:13 left but the Aggies would trail by eight points, 59-51 with 5:34 left to play. UTEp would hold a 62-54 lead after a three pointer by Kelli Willingham with 3:41 left to play but the Aggies would get a three from Madison Spence to draw to within five at 62-57 with 3:27 left to play. A free throw by Spence was answered by a three from Briana Green for UTEP to put the Miners back up by seven at 65-58 with 3:13 left. UTEP would extend the lead to nine with 2:38 left to play as Green would get a layup. The Aggies would get a pair of free throws from Jasmine Lowe with 2:25 left to play to cut their deficit to seven at 67-60. Jasmine Lowe would hit a three with 1:42 left to play to cut the Aggies' deficit to just four points and with 1:01 left to play, Tabytha Wampler hit a jumper to cut the deficit to just three at 68-65. After Steinberga missed a jumper, Madison Spence would grab the rebound with 33 seconds left to play. The Aggies would call a timeout and out of the timeout Spence would miss a three point attempt but the rebound was grabbed by Wampler who would put it back in to cut the Aggies' deficit to just one at 68-67 with 15 seconds left. After a quick foul by the Aggies, UTEP's Kelli Willingham would hit both free throws to go up 70-67 and with just nine seconds left, Erica Sanchez who was subbed into the game after the free throws, buried a three pointer to tie the game at 70 with nine seconds left in regulation. The game would head to overtime as Brianna Green's attempt would miss everything as the clock expired.

In overtime the Aggies took the first lead on a layup by Camila Rosen. After UTEP answered with a three pointer on the next possession, the Aggies would get a layup from Tabytha Wampler to go back in front 74-73. Green would answer with a layup to put UTEP back up by one 75-74 but Rosen would give the Aggies the lead back on a jumper with 1:16 left to play. The Miners would miss two shots and the Aggies would get the ball back with 17 seconds left. The Miners would foul Camila Rosen who calmly hit both free throws to give the Aggies a 78-75 lead. Green would miss a three point attempt and the Aggies would grab the rebound. UTEP would foul Tabytha Wampler with 1.4 seconds left and Wampler would hit both free throws to seal the game for the Aggies as they'd go on to win 80-75.

Madison Spence tied for team high-honors with 18 points hitting three three pointers and three free throws while grabbing six rebounds, dishing out seven assists while turning the ball over just once and also grabbed six steals. Jasmine Lowe also finished with 18 points hitting three three pointers and finishing 5-of-6 from the free throw line. Tabytha Wampler added 14 points and grabbed nine rebounds finished 2-of-2 from the free throw line, both coming in the final seconds of overtime. Camila Rosen finished with eight points and was perfect from the field and the free throw line as her two free throws also came in overtime.

Erica Sanchez finished with eight points and hit two three pointers including the three that sent the game to overtime.

UTEP's Gloria Brown finished with a game-high 20 points and was 8-of-12 from the field and 4-of-5 from the free throw line. Kelli Willingham finished with 12 points, Briana Green and Kayla Thornton each scored 11 points and Dietra Caldwell added 10.

The Aggies improve to 2-1 on the season and will open up their home schedule on Saturday against Houston.
