The Daily Aggie :: 11/24/10

The tough times continued last night for the Aggie team as the volleyball team lost in five sets to Utah State ending their season in the WAC tournament semifinals. The Aggies led the fifth set 13-10 but couldn't seal the deal. The Aggie careers of Kayleigh Giddens and Whitney Woods come to a close as the Aggies finish the season with an 18-13 record.

The Aggies finished with 22 more kills than Utah State but were outblocked 20-9. It's a disappointing end to the season as the Aggies had hoped to at least make it through to the championship match against Hawai'i tonight. The Wahine had no trouble with Idaho last night in the other semifinal match.

We'll have photos from the match posted a little later today.

The Aggie men's basketball team's skid reached four games as they lost to UTEP last night. The Aggies were down by nine at halftime but unlike last year in El Paso, they were unable to pull off a comeback victory. The Aggies outrebounded UTEP 48-27, won the points in the paint battle 26-12 and won the second chance points battle 15-5 but much like the Aggie volleyball team, still came out with a loss even though they dominated most of the key stats. UTEP hit 12-of-24 three pointers against the Aggies which is akin to Utah State outblocking the Aggies 20-9. It just changes the way both Aggie teams (volleyball and men's basketball) played.

Troy Gillenwater bounced back from his benching with 18 points and 14 rebounds and Hernst Laroche finished with 11 points but only two assists.

The next three games for the Aggies don't get any easier as they return home to face UTEP next Tuesday followed by back-to-back games against New Mexico.
