The Daily Aggie :: 12/08/10

Apologies for the light posting this week. It's finals week for NM State and there simply isn't much to be reported this week while the students are finishing up their academics.

However, there are a couple items of note. The WAC postseason awards for football were announced and Davon House and Taveon Rogers both earned spots on the WAC's postseason teams. House started the season as a First Team All-WAC player and finished the season as a First Team All-WAC player. Taveon Rogers earned Second Team All-WAC honors as a kick returner. His honor is well deserved but does not come without a bit of controversy. As good as Rogers' kick return season was, and it was quite good, it wasn't the best in the WAC. Utah State's Kerwynn Williams actually had a slightly better (a little over 30 yards better) year in terms of kick return yardage.

That's significant because Rogers set and held the NCAA's single-season kickoff return yardage record for exactly one week. He set the record against Hawai'i and the following Saturday, USU's Williams broke the record against Boise State.

Here's where the controversy lies. Louisiana Tech's Phillip Livas earned First Team All-WAC honors as a kick returner, Rogers earned Second Team honors and Williams got left off entirely. That's the problem with these postseason awards. They're generally highly subjective and the voting is done by the coaches so they're of course going to vote for "their guys" which we have no problem with. However, you can't snub a guy like Kerwynn Williams, particularly when he sets both the single-season WAC and NCAA records for kickoff return yardage.

A similar type of snub happened a couple years ago in softball. A Fresno State pitcher was an All-American but got left off the All-WAC teams (we're a little hazy on the details but it did happen).

Anyway, that got way off the original topic. The other postseason award news came yesterday as volleyball's Jennah DeVries was named to the AVCA West Region's First Team and Kayleigh Giddens was named to the Honorable Mention team.
