Aggies Snap 5-Game Skid With 74-58 Victory At Hawai'i In WAC Opener

The Aggie women's basketball team snapped a five-game losing streak and opened league play with a 74-58 victory over Hawai'i on Thursday evening in Honoulu as Tabytha Wampler scored a game-high 17 points on 7-of-9 shooting. The Aggies would lead by just three at halftime but pulled away late for the 74-58 win.

After jumping out to a quick 3-0 lead, the Aggies fell behind 10-5 as the Wahine went on an 8-0 run but New Mexico State would answer going on a 15-2 run over the next six minutes to take a 20-12 lead. The Aggies would get a pair of threes from Jasmine Lowe and Danisha Corbett during the run.

The Wahine would cut the Aggies' lead to just five at 27-22 after a pair of free throws by Shawna-Lei Kuehu with 6:10 left in the half but teammate Breanna Arbuckle would miss a pair of free throws that would have cut the Aggies' lead three and the Aggies would get a pair of free throws from Tabytha Wampler to go ahead 29-22 with 4:52 left in the half. Danisha Corbett would give the Aggies their largest lead of the half hitting a three pointer to go up 34-24 with 3:52 left in the half but the Wahine would finish the half on a 9-2 run to send the game into the break with the Aggies ahead 36-33.

The Aggies would open up the half on a 5-0 run forcing a quick timeout by the Wahine as New Mexico State would stretch their lead to 41-33 with 17:26 left in the game. The Aggies would maintain a five point lead after an Ariella McGhee basket with 11:42 left. The Wahine would close to within three at 49-46 after a yup by Breanna Arbuckle but Madison Spence would complete a three point play to put the Aggies up 52-46 with 7:58 left to play. The two teams would trade baskets but the Aggies would go on a 7-0 run behind a layup from Ariella McGhee and a 5-0 spurt from Jasmine Lowe to go up 61-48. Lowe would continue her point run hitting a pair of free throws to keep the Aggies up 63-50. After a pair of free throws by Keisha Kanekoa, Madison Spence would bury a three and Kaitlyn Soto would convert a fast break layup to give the Aggies a 68-52 lead with 3:01 left to play. The Aggies would wrap up their scoring with a layup by Tabytha Wampler and four free throws from Madison Spence as they would post the 74-58 win.

Jasmine Lowe would add 16 points to go along with Wampler's 17. Madison Spence scored 14 points with 13 coming in the second half. Danisha Corbett hit three three pointers en-route to 13 points. Ariella McGhee added eight points for the Aggies.

Keisha Kanekoa tied Wampler for game-high honors scoring 17 points. Kamilah Jackson added 12 for the Wahine and the Aggies held Megan Tinnin to nine points on 4-of-10 shooting and just 1-of-4 three point shooting.

The Aggies shot 46 percent from the floor while holding the Wahine to 39 percent. The Aggies hit 7-of-19 three pointers while the Wahine hit just 1-of-7. The Aggies hit 15-of-18 free throws while the Wahine converted 15-of-20.

With the victory the Aggies improve to 7-8 overall and 1-0 in conference play. New Mexico State will face San Jose State on Saturday evening in San Jose.
