The Daily Aggie :: 01/11/11

The Aggie basketball teams are back at it this week as the women host Nevada tomorrow night and then travel to rival Fresno State on Saturday. Meanwhile the men host Hawai'i on Thursday night and San Jose State on Saturday night.

On the men's side this week there is a mammoth showdown in Boise where the league's last two remaining undefeated teams, Boise State (yes, you read that right) and Utah State battle for first place. It's also interesting to note that in the latest ESPN Bracketology, Joe Lunardi has two teams, Boise State and Utah State, in the field of 68 with Boise State as the automatic qualifier and Utah State earning an at-large as they did last season when New Mexico State earned the autobid.

The 2010 football season wrapped up yesterday with the BCS title game. In case you missed it, you can check out Coach Walker's strategy for stopping both offenses, which was played out by both teams (in particular Auburn). We also discussed the Aggie program and got his thoughts on the team's needs personnel-wise heading into 2011.

The Aggies faced the top three teams in the WAC, Boise State, Hawai'i and Nevada, when each of the three teams was arguably playing their absolute best. As the final rankings roll out, the top four teams in the WAC were ranked in the Top 50 by the college football experts at the Pre-Snap Read, two of which were in the Top 10 (No. 6 Boise State and No. 10 Nevada) while in the AP and Coaches Polls, the Broncos and Wolf Pack finished 9th and 11th respectively (AP) and 7th and 12th respectively (Coaches) with Hawai'i receiving votes in both.

Signing Day is just a couple months away and it will be interesting to see what level of talent the Aggies are able to bring in.

Chris Murray of the Reno Gazette-Journal ranks the teams this week.

Chris Murray also notes that attendance is down for all but two schools in the WAC but attendance has increased for New Mexico State and Hawai'i.
