Madison SpenceThe New Mexico State women's basketball team picked up a crucial conference victory over visiting Utah State winning 75-71 on Saturday night as they rallied from a seven point deficit in the second half. Madison Spence scored 23 points on 7-of-13 shooting and fellow senior Danisha Corbett added 21 points on 5-of-10 from three point distance.

The first half saw both teams go on point runs as the Aggies rattled off five straight after falling behind 4-0 early. The UtAgs would score four more in a row to take an 8-5 lead but a pair of free throws by Danisha Corbett and a Jasmine Lowe layup would give the Aggies a -8 lead. Utah State would answer with a 5-0 run to take a 13-9 lead. The teams would trade a pair of threes and a pair of twos leaving the northern Aggies ahead 18-14 with 10:46 left in the half. New Mexico State would rattle off a 14-0 run over the next five minutes to take a 28-18 lead. The UtAgs would score four in a row to cut the Aggies' lead to six at 28-22 but Madison Spence would bury a three pointer with 3:22 left in the half to give the Aggies a 31-22 lead. The Aggies would miss a golden opportunity to extend their lead as Danisha Corbett missed a fast break layup, Tabytha Wampler would grab the offensive rebound but had her putback blocked and Utah State would capitalize on the missed opportunity as Alice Coddington would bury a three to cut the Aggies lead to 31-25. The triple would spark a 9-0 run tying the game at 3. The Aggies would get a three pointer from Erica Sanchez with under 30 seconds left in the half to send the Aggies into halftime with a 34-31 lead as Madison Spence and Danisha Corbett combined to score 19 of the final 22 points of the first half.

The two teams picked up right where they left off in the second half as the northern Aggies tied the score at 36 after a layup by Alice Coddington. The UtAgs would take a slim 41-39 lead but Tabytha Wampler would score four points in a row to give the Aggies a 43-41 lead. Devyn Christensen would hit a jumper with the shot clock expiring to tie the game at 43. The teams would then trade five layups giving Utah State a 49-47 lead but Kaitlyn Soto would hit a jumper to tie the game at 49.

The UtAgs would break the tie with a 5-0 run capped by a three point play from Ashlee Brown to take a 54-49 with 9:54 left to play. The Aggies would get a jumper from Madison Spence to trim the lead to three but Utah State would get four in a row to take a 58-51 lead with 8:30 left to play forcing a quick timeout from the Aggies. Aggie seniors Madison Spence and Danisha Corbett would answer for the Aggies with a pair of threes to cut the Utah State lead to one at 58-57 with 7:19 left to play. Andrea Chenier would continue the Aggie run with a floater from seven feet to give the Aggies a 59-58 lead with just under seven minutes left to play. Utah State's Ashlee Brown would hit a pair of free throws to end the Aggie run but Ariella McGhee would hit a jumper to give the Aggies a 61-60 lead prompting a quick time out from Utah State with 6:13 left to play.

Utah State's Devyn Christensen hit three free throws after getting fouled by Andrea Chenier while shooting a three pointer to give Utah State 63-61 lead with 4:25 left to play. Tabytha Wampler would hit a pair of free throws to tie the game at 63. Utah State would hit one of two free throws to give Utah State a 64-63 lead but the Danisha Corbett would bury a three to give the Aggies a 66-64 lead. Utah State would answer with a three from Devyn Christensen to take a 67-66 lead with 2:53 left to play but the Aggies would get a pair of free throws from Tabytha Wampler to give the Aggies the lead back at 68-67. Madison Spence would hit two free throws to give the Aggies a 70-67 lead. Wampler would add two more free throws giving the Aggies a 72-67 lead with 1:07 left in the game. The Aggie defense would force a Utah State turnover but an errant pass would give the UtAgs the ball back. After missing a shot, Ashlee Brown would grab the offensive rebound and put the ball back in to cut the Aggies' lead to 72-69 with 24.3 seconds left. Tabytha Wampler would hit one of two free throws to give the Aggies a 73-69 lead and Madison Spence would hit two more free throws with nine seconds left to seal the victory for the Aggies putting them up 75-69. Utah State would add a pair of free throws with 0.4 seconds left to make the final margin 75-71.

New Mexico State shot 46 percent from the field in the game while Utah State hit 43 percent from the field. Both teams shot well from the free throw line as the Aggies hit 17-of-20 attempts from the charity stripe while Utah State hit 19-of-22 free throw attempts.

With the victory New Mexico State improves to 9-10 overall and 3-2 in league play.
