Aggies Defeat Vandals 73-65, Sweep Regular Season Series

Gordo CastilloSenior guard Gordo Castillo scored a game-high 19 points and led the Aggies to a 73-65 come-from-behind victory over Idaho on Saturday night in the Pan American Center. Castillo hit five three pointers including three during a critical 12-3 run midway through the second half that propelled the Aggies to a seven point lead. The victory, coupled with Boise State's loss at Louisiana Tech, moved the Aggies into second place in the WAC standings.

The Aggies led early 8-6 but fell behind 14-8 with 13:36 left in the half. After pulling to within four at 20-16, the Vandals would extend their lead to seven after a Brandon Wiley layup. The Aggies would cut the lead to three, 25-22, after a jumper from Troy Gillenwater. However, the Vandals would extend their lead back to eight points on a dunk by Kyle Barone. Gordo Castillo would hit back-to-back threes to cut the Idaho lead to two points but Barone would get a dunk with time winding down to send the Aggies into halftime trailing 37-33.

The Vandals would extend their lead to five early in the second half but the Aggies would get to within one on a dunk by Troy Gillenwater with 15:54 left in the game. The Aggies would tie the game at 40 as Tshilidzi Nephawe would hit one of two free throws. The Vandals would take a 44-42 lead on a layup from Luiz Toledo but the Aggie offense would go on a 12-3 run spurred by three three-pointers from Gordo Castillo to take a 54-47 lead with 7:56 left to play.

The Vandals would call a 30-second timeout and responded with a 7-0 run to tie the game at 54 with 6:23 left to play. With the game tied at 56 the Aggies would go on an 8-1 run to take a seven point lead at 64-57. Idaho would cut the lead to three with 1:12 left to play as Jeff Ledbetter hit a three pointer but the Aggies would 7-of-8 free throws in the final 40 seconds to seal the 73-65 victory.

Gordo Castillo would finish the game 7-of-10 from the field and 5-of-8 from three point distance for 19 points. Troy Gillenwater scored 16 points but hit just 4-of-14 from the field as he went 8-of-10 from the free throw line hitting all eight in the final 2:03. Hamidu Rahman added 11 points and Tshilidzi Nephawe grabbed five rebounds.

Jeff Ledbetter scored a team-high 17 points on 6-of-13 shooting and hit 5-of-11from three point distance. Deremy Geiger added 15 points while Kyle Barone had 12 and Landon Tatum added 10.

With the victory the Aggies improve to 6-3 in conference play and 12-11 overall.
