Aggies Fall 88-83 In Overtime At Fresno State

Troy Gillenwater scored 33 points, his second 30-plus effort in the past two games, but it was not enough as the Aggies fell 88-83 in overtime at Fresno State. The Aggies shot 58.3 percent from the field in the first half and 50 percent in the second half but hit just 1-of-8 shots from the field in the overtime period.

The Aggies fell behind early as the Bulldogs jumped out to a 21-9 lead. The Aggies would respond with a 13-2 run behind two three pointers from Christian Kabongo and one from Troy Gillenwater to pull to within one point at 23-22. The Bulldogs would answer with a 13-4 run taking a 36-26 lead with 2:25 left to play in the half. The Aggies would end the half on a 9-1 run to cut the deficit to two at 37-35.

The Aggies would take their first lead of the second half on a three point play from Hamidu Rahman with 17:50 left to play in regulation as the Aggies would go up 45-43. The Aggies would extend their lead to six points after a Tyrone Watson layup with 14:23 remaining in regulation. The Aggies would extend their lead to seven at 61-54 on a dunk by Troy Gillenwater with 8:49 left in regulation. The Bulldogs would respond tying the game at 65 with 4:53 left to play.

New Mexico State would build their lead back to five points at 72-67 with 2:07 remaining but the Bulldogs would take a 74-72 lead with 43 seconds left to play in regulation. Bandja Sy would head to the free throw line with 31 seconds left as Greg Smith would collect his fifth foul. Sy would convert the first to bring the Aggies to within one at 74-73. Sy would miss the second but Tyrone Watson would grab the offensive rebound for the Aggies. Troy Gillenwater would get fouled by Ned Golubovic with 15 seconds left but he would miss the first free throw leaving the Aggies down 74-73. He would convert the second to tie the game at 74 and the teams would head to overtime.

In the overtime period the Bulldogs would take a four point lead. The Aggies would cut the lead to two twice in the first three mites bu the Bulldogs would go up by six and the Aggies would get no closer than five points the remainder of the game falling 88-83.

Tyrone Watson scored 14 points and grabbed six rebounds, Hernst Laroche and Christian Kabongo each added 10 points.

Kevin Olekaibe scored 24 points to lead the Bulldogs. Greg Smith added 17 points and seven rebounds before fouling out just prior to halftime. Garrett Johnson also added 17 points and Ned Golubovic pitched in 14 points and eight rebounds as well as four assists.

With the loss the Aggies drop to 6-4 in conference play and 12-12 overall.
