Aggies Play Well In Round One Of Arizona Invitational

TUCSON, AZ - The New Mexico State women's golf team tallied a 297 finishing round one of the 2011 Wildcat Invitational in sixth place. Seniors Pang Chanachai and Mint Swaschuto led the way for the Aggies as both players scored an even par at The Golf Club at Vistoso, which is a par 72, 6,250 yard course in Tucson.

NM State carded 13 birdies to finish sixth in the 16 team field, which includes the likes of No. 7 California, No. 11 Arizona, No. 22 UC-Davis, and No. 27 Washington. Chanachai tallied three birdies and 12 pars while Swaschuto marked two birdies and 14 pars to tie for 11th on the individual leader board after 18-holes of play.

"We played well today and the team seemed to be playing comfortably," head coach Paul Brilliant said. "Hopefully this is a sign that we picked up right where we left off in the fall."

The Aggies ended the 2010 fall season with a win at the Price's "Give 'Em Five" Intercollegiate in Las Cruces in October.

The Aggies finished round one ahead of WAC teams Idaho, San Jose State and Hawai'i, with the Vandals finishing closest to the Aggies, tied for ninth with a 303.

Freshman Demi Mak carded a 4-over-par 76 on the day and junior Ashley Elias finished just one stroke behind her with a 5-over 77. Mak tied for 36th and Elias tied for 43rd. Senior Buz Bowerman-Ritchie rounded out the Aggie lineup with a 14-over par 86.

NM State concluded its second round with a 298 but that score will not be official until all teams finished the round. Round two was postponed until 8:00 a.m. (MT), Tuesday, Feb. 8 The final round starts immediately after all teams have finished the second round. Live scoring is available at
