LAS CRUCES, N.M. - The New Mexico State women's golf team will be participating in the Third Annual Golf Week Conference Challenge, Sept. 18-21 at Red Sky Golf Club- Fazio Course in Wolcott, Colo. They will be competing against the top teams from 18 different Division I conferences.
The Aggies will be taking on No. 15 Oklahoma out of the Big 12 conference, followed by the Big East's No. 18 Notre Dame, the Big West's No. 23 UC Davis, Pac-10's No. 29 Oregon, West Coast's No. 31 Pepperdine, No. 32 TCU out of MWC, No. 34 Mississippi out of SEC and No. 39 Denver out of The Sun Belt Conference.
"It is a matter of good recruiting and good coaching, good facilities, and good weather." head coach Brilliant said. The Aggies have improved and moved up in the rankings this year placing them higher then University of New Mexico as well as their I-10 rival UTEP. NM State is ranked 55 out of 254 other teams ranked according to Golfweek.com.
Demi Mak is an accomplished freshman that is new to the Aggies. She tied for second at the 2010 Price's "Give "Em Five" Intercollegiate, which was held at the NM State Golf Course. Mak also played in the Macua Ladies Amateur open and won four times. Mak has played in several other tournaments as an amateur and also won the 2008 UNDER ARMOUR College Golf Combines.
Ashley Elias is a junior on the team at NM State this year and will be looking forward to competing with the best in the country next season. Elias played in all nine tournaments her freshman year in 2008 and averaged a score of 79.84 out of the 25 rounds she played in. Elias had an average score as a sophomore of 80.11 and placed in the top ten at the WAC Women's Golf Championships.
Angelina Bortoletto who is also a junior this year, will be fighting for a spot to take on the top teams next year. She played five tournaments her freshman year in 2008. She was one of the two freshmen who were competing for the Aggies. Bortoletto played in 20 rounds during her sophomore season and posted and average score of 80.80 per round at the Price's "Give "Em Five" Intercollegiate with her low round at 74 during the final round.
The Aggies will be competing next at the Long Beach Invitational in Long Beach, California February 14-15.
