Aggie Women's Tennis Defeats UNM For Second Consecutive Year

LAS CRUCES, N.M. - The women's tennis team of New Mexico State University defeated the University of New Mexico in a tight 4-3 victory to give the Aggies their first win against their rival in Albuquerque, N.M., in years.

The Aggies won two of the three doubles matches to win the doubles point, which would prove to be vital to the Aggies' success. Junior Manon Sylvain and sophomore Jodie Williams defeated Nikolina Grbac and Michaela Bezdickova 8-5 in the second doubles match. Natalia Salum and Ros-Polly Nguyen defeated Michaela Oldani and Laura Richardson 8-1 in the third doubles match.

NM State relied on the bottom half of the order for the singles wins against UNM.

Salum defeated Kristen Eggleson 6-1, 1-6, 6-4, in the No. 4 match, Williams defeated Richardson 6-4, 2-6, 6-1, in the No. 5 match and Nguyen defeated Oldani 6-4, 6-3, in the No. 6 match.

"The team is coming together and is fighting extremely hard," head tennis coach Ivan Fernandez said. "I am very proud of the Aggies."

The victory gives the Aggies two straight wins over the Lobos. NM State defeated UNM 6-1 in Las Cruces last season on March 13, 2010.
