Aggies Fall At Home To Idaho 73-65

Madison SpenceThe New Mexico State women's basketball team fell to 6-9 in conference play and slipped to 6th place with a 73-65 loss to Idaho on Thursday evening. The Aggies will face either Hawai'i or Boise State in the opening round of the WAC tournament on Wednesday evening.

Tabytha Wampler finished with a game-high 20 points and 10 rebounds while Madison Spence added 16 points and tallied four assists and a steal. Danisha Corbett added 11 points and grabbed eight rebounds but it was not enough to overcome Idaho's 8-of-18 performance from three point distance.

The Aggie defense opened strong forcing six turnovers and holding Idaho to just one shot while building a 7-0 lead through nearly the first five minutes of the game. The Vandals would respond with a 17-4 run to take a 17-11 lead with 10:15 left in the half. The Aggies would respond with a 6-0 run behind layups from Danisha Corbett and Tabytha Wampler and a jumper from Madison Spence to tie the game at 17.

Idaho would retake the lead going up 22-19 on a layup from Ganeaya Rogers but the Aggies would get back-to-back baskets from Danisha Corbett to take a 23-22 lead with 6:27 left. The Vandals would retake the lead going up 27-25 on a three pointer from Keri Arendse with 4:59 left to play in the half. The Aggies would retake the lead as Christina Fletcher and Tabytha Wampler would get a pair of layups but Idaho would go on an 8-2 run to close the half and go into the halftime break up 35-31.

The Aggies would trail by just two with 16:01 left to play but the Vandals would go on a 9-0 run to take a 49-38 lead with 14:34 left to play. The Aggies would cut the lead to seven on a Madison Spence jumper with 12:51 left in the game as the Aggies would trail 49-42 but Idaho would push their lead to 12 points at 54-42 on a layup from Ganeaya Rogers with 11:09 left to play.

The Aggies would make a push cutting the Vandals lead to 62-55 with 6:04 left in the game as Madison Spence would bury a jumper and the Aggies would trail by just three at 64-61 after a Spence jumper with 3:48 left to play, however, the Vandals would go on a 4-0 run to push their lead back to seven at 68-61 with 2:20 left to play.

The Aggies would get no closer than six points in the final minute of the game as the Vandals would hold on for the 73-65 victory.

The Vandals had three players finish in double-figures as Yinka Olorunnife finished with 13 points and 11 rebounds, Rachele Kloke added 12 points and Derisa Taleni scored 11. Three other Vandals scored nine points apiece.
