The New Mexico State baseball team swept the season series with in-state rival New Mexico for the first time since 2001 winning 9-4 on Tuesday night at Presley Askew Field.
The Aggies took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning as Ryan Aguayo singled to lead off the inning. Bryan Karraker was hit by a pitch and Andy Lyon doubled down the left field bringing in Aguayo. Karraker would advance to third on the hit putting runners at first and third with nobody out. Kurt Snowley would ground out to the third baseman for the first out but Chuck Howard would walk to load the bases however Zach Voight would strike out and Chace Perkins would fly out to end the inning.
The Aggies would extend their lead in the bottom of the fourth as they would load the bases with one out and Zach Voight would triple to bring home Andy Lyon, Kurt Snowley and Chuck Howard to give the Aggies a 4-0 lead.
Starter Dan Reid would cruise through the first five innings facing just 19 batters and allowing just three hits.
The Lobos would finally get on the board in the top of the sixth inning as Kyle Stiner would get a one-out single and John Michael Twitchell singled to right center with two outs to put runners at the corners. Quay Grant would single to drive in Stiner and Twitchell cutting the Aggies' lead to 4-2 heading to the bottom of the sixth.
The Aggies would answer the Lobos' runs as Chuck Howard would get a one-out single and Zach Voight would draw a walk to put runners and first and second with one out. Tanner Waite would also draw a walk to load the bases. Parker Hip would reach on an error by the Lobo second baseman scoring Voight and Howard giving the Aggies' a 6-2 lead.
Neither team would score in the seventh but the Lobos would tack on a pair of unearned runs taking advantage of an Aggie error as Jaco Nelson would single to drive in John Michael Twitchell and Mitch Garver to cut the Aggies' lead to 6-4.
The Aggies would answer the Lobos' runs again in the bottom of the inning as Chuck Howard would walk to lead off the inning. Zach Voight would reach on an error by the Lobo shortstop as the ball dropped from his glove while trying to get the force out at second. The call would bring UNM head coach Ray Birmingham out of the dugout to argue the call and he would be ejected. The call would prove to be big for the Aggies as Parker Hipp would reach with one out to load the bases and Zach Fisher would single to right to bring home Howard and Voight to give the Aggies an 8-4 lead. Ryan Aguayo would get a sacrifice fly to score Hipp from third to give the Aggies a 9-4 lead heading to the ninth.
Scott Coffman would come in in the ninth to close out the game and would get a ground out and two strikeouts to close out the victory.
Ryan Aguayo finished the game 2-for-4 with an RBI, Andrew Lyon would finish the game 2-for-5 with an RBI and Zach Voight would finish the game 1-for-4 but drove in three runs.
Dan Reid picked up the victory for the Aggies throwing 6.0 innings allowing six hits and just two runs striking out three. Justin Cooper pitched 1.2 innings allowing a walk but striking out three. Gerardo Renteria threw a third of an inning allowing a hit. Scott Coffman would pitch the final inning striking out two of the three batters he faced.
The Aggies improve to 11-2 on the season and travel to Corvallis, Ore. to face the Beavers twice and Virginia Military Institute.
