The Daily Aggie :: 03/15/11

The Aggie softball team takes on No. 7 Arizona this afternoon at the NM State Softball Complex. The Wildcats come in with a potent offense and an ace in the circle in Kenzie Fowler. Fowler no-hit the Aggies in Tucson last season but is coming off a weekend in which she struggled against Baylor giving up six runs on nine hits in 4.2 innings in a 6-0 loss and then gave up seven runs on eight hits in only 2.1 innings in an eventual Arizona win. Fowler recorded just seven strikeouts in those two games and issued four walks.

When the Wildcats have lost, their offense has been held in check and their pitching staff has been hit and hit hard. The four losses have seen Arizona outscored 28-3 and have been out-hit 36-10.

The Aggie pitchers will have their hands full as always with leadoff hitter Brittany Lastrapes hitting a whopping .486. She also leads the team in walks with 18. In the middle of the lineup the Wildcats have some serious pop with Stacie Chambers' 11 home runs and 38 RBIs and Brigette Del Ponte's nine home runs and 27 RBIs.

We'll hopefully see a matchup of Fowler and Aggie ace Alex Newman in the circle in the first game of the doubleheader. Fowler is 13-2 in the season with a 1.74 ERA while Newman is 11-1 on the season, her only loss coming against Arizona State.

The first game of today's doubleheader will be televised on AggieVision and Fox Sports Arizona. First pitch is set for 4:00 p.m. (MT).
