LAS CRUCES, N.M. - Senior centerfielder Wes Starkes was named Verizon Western Athletic Conference Hitter of the Week, Monday, March 28 by the league office for his play during week six of the college baseball season.

The senior from Athens, Texas, helped the Aggies to a four-game series sweep against Binghamton. Starkes hit .533 (8-of-15) in four games with a double, a home run and eight RBI. He walked four times and struck out only once. He also scored nine runs and was a perfect 3-for-3 on stolen base attempts.

"Starkes has been playing well for us all year long," head coach Rocky Ward said. "His numbers have been up from a year ago and he has been working hard to better himself all year long. He is very deserving of this honor.

He is currently hitting .338 on the year with 22 RBI and 30 runs scored. He is just outside the top ten nationally in runs scored, although NM State is second in the nation in runs scored.

There have been four different Aggies earning player of the week honors this season. Sophomore second baseman Parker Hipp has been named Hitter of the Week (Feb. 21 and March 6) twice, while Ryan Aguayo (Feb. 28) took home the honor once. Senior right hand pitcher Dan Reid was also named Pitcher of the Week (March 21).

Starkes and the rest of the Aggies take on Northern Colorado in a four-game series starting Friday, April 1 at Presley Askew Field.
