The Daily Aggie :: 04/01/11

The Aggie baseball and softball teams are back in action today as the softball team plays a doubleheader against Utah State while the baseball team kicks off a four-game set against Northern Colorado.

Utah State comes into the series on a 14-game losing streak while the Aggies have put together five wins in a row after losing three straight to No. 14 Nebraska.

This is an important series for New Mexico State as this is a team that the Aggies need to take care of business against. The Aggies have just one "bad" loss on their resume right now (in terms of RPI) and losing games against a team that is 5-27 does not look good on your resume regardless of whether they're on the road, in conference or not.

We expect the Aggies to come out with Alex Newman in the circle in game one of the series to try to pick up a win in the first game and set the tone for the remainder of the series. After that, the Aggies are still trying to get one of their remaining pitchers to pick up the No. 2 role in the circle.

USU is giving up 6.5 runs per game on the season so this should be a pitching staff that the Aggies can take advantage of.

The weather should not be a factor today and the Aggies need to take advantage of that. Coach Rodolph noted that they need to make sure that the weather conditions do not affect them mentally in this series. Tomorrow is supposed to be rainy but highs in the 60s.

A sweep is a must for the Aggies this weekend as they try to continue to build momentum, particularly with a huge series against Fresno State at home next weekend.

First pitch for the first game of today's doubleheader is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. (MT). Live Stats will be available via the Utah State athletic website click here for game one and here for game two.

The Aggie baseball team kicks off a four-game series with Northern Colorado today at 6:05 p.m. (MT) at Presley Askew Field. The Aggies come in riding an 8-game winning streak and with wins in the first two games of the series, they will have put together win streaks of at least 10 games in each of the past three season, no small feat.

The Bears come in with a 2-17 record but don't be fooled by their record. They've played some very competitive games with nine of their 17 losses coming by four runs or less.

T.J. Berge leads the way for the Bears as he's hitting .359 on the season. Adam Hilker is batting .338 on the season. One interesting stat on the Bears is that they have not hit a home run this season (their opponents have hit just 10 against them).

Today's game is scheduled for a 6:05 p.m. (MT) start. The game can be heard on KSNM AM 570 in Las Cruces with streaming audio and video available via Aggie Access (subscription required).
