The New Mexico State softball suffered their first conference loss on Friday night falling 9-1 to No. 23 Fresno State in a run-rule decision. Fresno State's Michelle Moses held the Aggies to just four hits allowing a single run, a solo home run by Tiare Jennings in the fourth inning. The Aggie pitching staff struggled allowing 12 Fresno State hits and nine runs as Alex Newman lost for just the fourth time this season.
The Bulldogs got on the board in the top of the first scoring an unearned run with two outs to take a 1-0 lead. The Aggies would give up three more two out runs in the top of the second as Brooke Ortiz would record an RBI single and starting pitcher Michelle Moses would help her own cause hitting her ninth home run of the season to put the Bulldogs on top 4-0.
After Fresno State loaded the bases with one out in the top of the third, the Aggies would appear to be on their way to getting out of the inning unscathed after getting a force out at home plate but Michelle Moses would again help her own cause singling up the middle off of Newman driving in a run. Courtney Moore would deliver a two RBI double to make the score 7-0. Alex Villalobos would replace Newman in the circle but a balk would score Michelle Moses from third to make the score 8-0.
The Aggies would finally get on the scoreboard in the fourth inning as Tiare Jennings would lead off with a solo home run. Ashley Maroda would single and it appeared that the Aggies were ready to put on a rally. Maroda would advance to second on a wild pitch but Moses would get the next three batters out as Vanessa Valles would pop out, Valerie Swedberg fouled out to the third baseman and Teresa Conrad would strike out leaving Maroda stranded at second.
With the score 8-1 headed to the top of the fifth the Bulldogs added one more run to stretch their lead back to eight runs. The Aggies would be unable to mount a rally in the bottom of the inning and the game would end via the run rule.
Alex Newman allowed eight runs on 10 hits in just 2.2 innings of work while Fresno State starter Michelle Moses went the distance allowing one run on four hits while striking out five Aggies batters.
Kylie Randall finished the game 2-for-3 at the plate while Ashley Maroda and Tiare Jennings were the only other Aggies to record hits in the game.
The loss drops the Aggies to 6-1 in WAC play while Fresno State takes over sole possession of first place at 7-0.
The Aggies and Bulldogs wrap up the three game series with a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at 2:00 p.m. with both games being televised on AggieVision.
